ROME (Reuters) - The Italian government is working with the European Union to ensure that the bloc's firms hit by Russian sanctions are compensated for the damage they have suffered, it said on Thursday.
Russia has placed the assets of a handful of Western companies under "temporary management" since the start of the war in Ukraine, justifying such moves as retaliation for actions by other countries against Russian businesses.

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs has removed the cap on bonuses for its top bankers in the UK, according to a source familiar with the matter, months after the country axed the policy it had inherited from the European Union.
The cap sprung from a 2014 move by the EU, which the UK exited six years later, to try to deter bankers from the kind of excessive risk-taking that was blamed for the global financial crisis of 2008.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The death toll from heavy rains in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul rose to 13, local authorities said on Thursday, as the state government declared a state of public calamity to handle the dramatic situation.
The storms, which have caused the greatest devastation in the state in recent years, also left 21 people missing and 5,257 displaced in 134 cities, according to Rio Grande do Sul's civil defense.
