TOKYO (Reuters) -The Bank of Japan must avoid raising interest rates to combat a weak yen, as higher borrowing costs would hit consumption and services inflation, Tsutomu Watanabe, a former central bank official and an expert on price trends, told Reuters.

Apple apologizes for iPad Pro 'Crush' ad, Ad Age says May 9, 2024 09:08PM

(Reuters) - Apple apologized on Thursday after an advertisement for its latest iPad Pro model sparked criticism by showing an animation of musical instruments and other symbols of creativity being crushed, Ad Age magazine reported.

"Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry,” Ad Age quoted the iPhone maker as saying.

US set to impose tariffs on China EVs and other strategic sectors, Bloomberg reports May 9, 2024 09:05PM

(Reuters) -The Biden administration is set to announce new China tariffs next week that target strategic sectors including electric vehicles, batteries and solar equipment, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

The full announcement, scheduled for Tuesday, is also expected to largely maintaining existing levies, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Dollar nurses losses after another set of soft jobs data May 9, 2024 08:58PM

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar had a soft tone in early Asian trading on Friday after losing ground overnight to the euro and sterling on the back of U.S. data showing further signs of a cooling labour market and hence higher odds of Fed rate cuts this year.

SoftBank in talks with Naver over control of Line operator LY May 9, 2024 08:48PM

TOKYO/SEOUL (Reuters) - SoftBank CEO Junichi Miyakawa said on Thursday that the Japanese telecommunications firm is in talks with South Korea's Naver over control of LY Corp, which operates the popular messaging app Line.
