Death toll from Brazil downpours climbs to 83 May 6, 2024 09:10AM

SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Heavy rains battering Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul have killed at least 83 people, authorities said on Monday, while more than a hundred were still missing.

The storms have affected more than two thirds of the nearly 500 cities in the state, leaving about 122,000 people displaced, according to the state civil defense authority.

Columbia cancels university-wide commencement ceremony after protests May 6, 2024 09:05AM

(Reuters) -Columbia University on Monday canceled its university-wide commencement ceremony scheduled for May 15 in favor of smaller, school-based events after weeks of pro-Palestinian protests roiled the Ivy League School.

Swedish central bank to cut key rate this week, Reuters poll shows May 6, 2024 08:49AM

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden's central bank will cut its key interest rate this week by a quarter percentage point to 3.75% and then continue to ease policy gradually through the year, a Reuters poll showed on Monday.

A large majority of the 22 analysts saw the Riksbank cutting rates for the first time since 2016 after gaining confidence that inflation has been tamed from a peak of more than 10% at the end of 2022.

Holocaust researchers use AI to search for unnamed victims May 6, 2024 08:45AM

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Researchers in Israel are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to comb through piles of records to try to identify hundreds of thousands of Jewish people killed in the Holocaust whose names are missing from official memorials.

Russia detains journalist Kevorkova, son says May 6, 2024 08:39AM

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has detained Russian journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova who is known for her work in the Middle East, her son said.

"My mother was detained today," Vasily Polonsky said on Telegram. "My mama is not guilty of anything. She's a journalist."
