Island nation of Sao Tome and Principe to ask Portugal for colonial reparations May 2, 2024 12:44PM

LISBON (Reuters) - The government of the African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe will ask Portugal to repair the moral damages caused by colonialism, the country's education and cultural minister said on Thursday.

Speaking to Portugal's Lusa news agency, minister Isabel Abreu said the Sao Tome and Principe government would draw up a plan to negotiate reparations with Portugal, adding the process would take time.

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's military has ordered two officers to face court martial proceedings over a drone strike that killed at least 85 civilians, the defence HQ said on Thursday, more than four months after President Bola Tinubu ordered an investigation.

Pentagon acknowledges US mistakenly killed civilian in 2023 Syria strike, Washington Post reports May 2, 2024 12:27PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has acknowledged in an internal investigation that the United States mistakenly killed a civilian in Syria in a 2023 drone strike, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

The U.S. Central Command assessment confirms earlier reporting by the Washington Post that the U.S.'s initial claim

that it had slain a senior Al Qaeda leader was false.

Heavy rains in big Brazil farm state disrupt soy, corn harvests in final stages May 2, 2024 12:11PM

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Torrential rainfall in Brazil's second-largest soybean and sixth-largest corn state is disrupting the final stages of the harvest, according to a meteorologist's bulletin on Thursday, a grains broker and an analyst.

Universal Music beats earnings forecasts after blockbuster Swift tour May 2, 2024 12:02PM

(Reuters) -Universal Music Group comfortably beat expectations for first-quarter core profit after a blockbuster tour by its main star Taylor Swift and sales growth in all units, the company said on Thursday.

The world's biggest music label posted adjusted core earnings (EBITDA) of 591 million euros ($632.6 million), up 15.9% year-on-year and above the 567 million expected by analysts in a Visible Alpha consensus shared by the company.
