The Vision Enhancing "Bionic Eye" Deemed Safe For Long Term Use After Three Year Clinical Trial

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2015

After a three year trial designed to study the efficiency and long term safety of the Argus II retinal implant, more commonly known as the "bionic eye," researchers have determined the trial to be a success, and are recommending the Argus II as a safe and viable tool for patients facing or already affected by complete vision loss as a result of Retinitis pigmentosa. The results of the study were published in the June 23, 2015 issue of Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

"The results of this clinical trial are very exciting for the treatment of Retinitis pigmentosa specifically, as well as for the prospect of using cutting-edge technology to treat a range of ophthalmology problems across the board in the future," said Dr. Ghassan Zein, medical director and Femto-LASIK (bladeless) eye surgeon at the Beverly Hills Medical Center of Kuwait.

The clinical trial consisted of 30 patients ranging in age from 28 to 77 across the United States and Europe, all of whom had little or no light perception in both eyes. After undergoing a Functional Low-vision Observer Rated Assessment (FLORA), an FDA mandated visual function test, 89 percent of the trial subjects were found to perform significantly better on computer screen and field tests using the bionic eye. The device was granted FDA approval in 2013. After a year, as many as two-thirds of the trial subjects had not experienced device or surgery related problems or side effects. After three years, the researchers reported no device failures.

From the pioneering use of our femtosecond lasers to our TearLab technology for diagnosing and treating dry eye syndrome," added Dr. Zein.
