Lunar Tourists Debut Anti-Gun Violence Rock Anthem

On September 24, 2016, Lunar Tourists, a Brooklyn-based rock band, joined the historic legacy of civic-minded musicians with the release of their debut single and video, "Safe at Home," a rock anthem assailing unfettered gun proliferation and violence. "Safe at Home" is one of 13 songs available on the group's soon-to-be released CD/album, "One Small Step."

"Safe at Home" begins with a haunting rhythm guitar and edgy lead, setting a mood of uncertainty and frustration. The words of the first verse reinforce this sentiment, beginning with the opening lines: "Why is it so hard to reach some understanding? People on the pavement, screaming and demanding. Even though it makes no sense; they say they must be armed. People dying in the street why is it so hard?!"

All of this leads to a rocking chorus and the primal lyrics of the song, "I wanna know." As if standing in front of members of Congress and the leaders of the NRA, Lunar Tourists demand an answer to the most contentious question confronting America today -- why do interest groups insist that people have unfettered access to guns without regard to the societal cost, -- 32,000 dead Americans a year killed by gun violence? The chorus closes with an equally urgent question "where can good people go to be safe at home" a message which lends itself to the song's title and emphasizes that, with the widespread availability of unregulated guns, nowhere is safe.

Mike Silver, whose inspiration for the song was the heart-breaking murder of reporter Alison Parker shot on live television last year, hopes that "people will coalesce behind the message that unregulated gun proliferation must end, and that we must all join together to demand that America's leaders take a rational approach toward stopping gun violence through universal background checks, licensing of gun owners, mandatory safety courses, and gun registration."

Douglas P. Murphy, lead guitarist for the group, believes that the passionate message of "Safe at Home" is driven, not only by the lyrics, but also by "the power chords in the chorus and musical phrases before each verse." But separate and apart from the haunting chords and lyrics, Murphy points out that, "throughout American history, music has often played a significant role in bringing about societal change. Now, more than ever, musicians must come together and help change how America deals with guns."

Together, the music and lyrics of "Safe at Home" create an anthem that the members of Lunar Tourists hope will spur civic activism and soul-searching that precipitates a change in the way Americans of all political stripes view the widespread availability of guns throughout the United States.
