Labor Day Travel Surge Means Increased Police Presence on Arizona Roads, According to Corso Law Group

This Labor Day weekend, AAA expects more than 1.4 million Arizonans to travel over the holiday. With this marking one of the busiest summer travel periods to date, Arizona criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor Christopher Corso says law enforcement will be out in full force to control drunk driving and other traffic violations as residents and visitors travel throughout the state.

Of the 1.4 million expected travelers, more than 1.1 million, or 78 percent, will be driving to their Labor Day destination, according to AAA.

"People want to take advantage of the last three-day weekend of the summer," said Christopher Corso, founder of Corso Law Group. "That excitement, combined with millions of people on the road and Labor Day partying can easily escalate into a dangerous situation."

Around the nation, air travel will be at its all-time summer busiest with two million daily passengers flying the Wednesday before Labor Day (Sept. 2) through the Tuesday after the holiday (Sept. 8) with the most congested travel day landing on Friday, Sept. 4.

This will be an increase of 59,000 more travelers per day compared to the same seven-day period in 2014, Airlines for America reports.

As an influx of people are expected to be flying in and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as well as driving to and from Arizona over the three-day weekend, police presence will be heavy as patrols search for drunk driving and other common traffic offenses, like speeding.

"Arizona drivers will need to be extra cautious behind the wheel this Labor Day," Corso said. "Police presence will be exceptionally strong before the weekend even begins."

Last year, nearly 2,000 police officers in 65 law enforcement agencies participated in a massive DUI crackdown across Arizona with sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols active from Friday, August 29 to Monday, September 1.

More than 580 DUI arrests were made over Labor Day weekend in 2014, which increased 16 percent from the year before. Citations for underage drunk drivers as well as suspected drug DUIs were also higher in 2014 than in 2013, The Arizona Republic reports.
