Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Launches New Concussion Clinic

Hollywood, Fl (PRWEB) May 31, 2016

Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital (JDCH) opens the doors to its new Concussion Clinic serving South Florida.

The clinic is led by a world class team of physicians, board certified in sports medicine, pediatric neurology, pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatric neuropsychology and also a team of certified vestibular therapists.

The Concussion Clinic operates from four locations: Hollywood, Coral Springs, Boca Raton, and Weston.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that 1.6 million to 3.8 million concussions occur each year and that 5-10% of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season. With children heading for summer break, now is the time for parents to make themselves aware of the various unique injury hazards that their kids may be subject to when they take part in outdoor activities.

While families may think that concussions are for the most part limited to the football field, doctors urge them to think about the many activities that a child or teen do during the summer months. Kids can organize various games, including soccer or lacrosse, two of many contact sports that make them vulnerable to injuries and concussions. Additionally, even when a child is involved in a recreational sport such as bicycle riding, skateboarding or rollerblading, he or she could be at risk for concussions.

This clinic is a multidisciplinary effort of many JDCH specialists working together including Diana Martinez, MD, Medical Director for the Division of Pediatric Neurology; Stacy Stibb, DO, pediatric physiatrist; Virmarie Quinones-Pagan, MD, pediatric rehabilitation specialist; Christina M. Zafiris, PhD, psychologist; and Mathew Fazekas, MD, pediatric sports medicine specialist.

"If your son or daughter has signs or symptoms of a concussion -- including [but not limited to] an injury with a subsequent headache, feeling like they're in a fog, dizziness, confusion -- they should be pulled from sports immediately and evaluated by a healthcare professional," said Fazekas. "The concussion clinic is set up as a one stop shop where they will undergo a full neurological examination, and they may undergo neurocognitive testing, and they'll start a process of return-to-learning and return-to-sports, as directed by the physician."
