Greenberg Traurig's Emerging Technology Practice Group has partnered with Northwestern University's The Garage to serve as advisors and mentors for its start-up incubator. Located on the Evanston campus, The Garage is a cross-disciplinary space designed for all Northwestern students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship, and to help early-stage ventures grow.

As part of the program, Greenberg Traurig attorneys will work with the resident teams and student entrepreneurs at The Garage to mentor and educate them on legal issues. The firm's corporate and intellectual property (IP) attorneys will hold office hours on campus, providing time for students to meet and discuss issues affecting their business, industry and venture.

Greenberg Traurig will also put on quarterly educational workshops for student entrepreneurs at The Garage. Past presentations include:

  • On December 1, 2015, Philadelphia attorney Nataliya Rymer presented, "Immigration Options for New Hires: A Guide for Startups," which guided the student entrepreneurs through the differences between non-immigrant visas, immigrant visas, and the EB-5 program.
  • On February 29, 2016, Boston corporate attorney Daniel J. Blanchard and Boston IP attorney Todd Basile presented, "From the Ground Up: Corporate and Intellectual Property (IP) Basics," which focused on choosing the type of legal business entity; attracting venture and angel funding; and developing, protecting, and monetizing IP assets.
  • On Monday, April 25, 2016, Boston corporate attorney Abdullah Malik presented, "Business Basics," which guided the start-up teams through the process of setting up a new venture. On August 10, 2016, David Gitlin, co-leader of Greenberg Traurig's Emerging Technology Practice, presented on term sheets.

For the 2016-2017 school year, several workshops are being scheduled, focusing on topics such as IP, immigration, and corporate law. Office hours will also be scheduled in connection with the workshops.
