Columbia, SC (PRWEB) May 21, 2015

Carol Anne Johnson, Esq., who is licensed to practice law in both South Carolina and Florida, recently announced the upcoming expansion of her practice, which currently provides estate and legacy planning and Special Needs Planning for disabled children and adults in Florida. When asked, "Why South Carolina?" Carol answered, "South Carolina is a very beautiful state full of warm and friendly people - I own property here and it is where I hope to retire someday. In the meantime, South Carolina provides a great deal of services for those with disabilities and there is a need for more legal advocates to represent disabled individuals and their families."

Carol became a legal advocate for the disabled because of her own personal experiences with her autistic son. "I understand the challenges faced by families and individuals with disability. And, it is my goal to provide exceptional legal representation to help them achieve a better, more stable quality of life by carefully structuring an estate plan that doesn't jeopardize eligibility for government benefits," said Carol.

Recently, Carol was a featured speaker at a symposium on "Perspectives on Death and Dying," held at Columbia University in New York City. At the symposium, sponsored by the Institute for Science and Human Values, Carol discussed the legal issues and barriers facing disabled family members seeking to have their advance directives followed by their medical providers, in accordance with the Patient Self-Determination Act. She has also been both a featured speaker for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in Florida, on the topic of Special Needs Planning, and an exhibitor at the recent South Carolina Autism Society's 2015 Conference in Irmo.

"Special needs planning begins with wealth management and estate planning," said Carol. "But, it is much more than merely drafting and managing Special Needs Trusts - it also entails planning for the inevitable changes and transitions that must occur as caregivers age. It is that 'transitional planning' which is often directly proportional to obtaining successful outcomes for the special needs individual."
