Notable ETF Movers of the Day 11/18: SPY, XLE, SLV Higher; VXX, UNG, UUP Lower

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 2.03% to $120.25 and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq:
    QQQQ) up 2.02% to $52.64. Markets are up today, mostly bolstered by positive sentiment for the General Motors
    (NYSE: GM) IPO, which had a strong opening today. Additionally, eased European debt worries today are picking up investor confidence. Both Allied Irish Banks (NYSE: AIB) and The Bank of Ireland (NYSE: IRE) are trading up over 11% today.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 2.17% to $63.04. Being led by Haliburton
    (NYSE: HAL) today, as shares are up about 4.2% in afternoon trading days after the company made a full disclosure about the liquids that they use in hydrofracking. Shares actually hit a 52-week high of $37.12 as well. Economic data showed that initial jobless claims of 439K came in below the Street consensus of 441K, with a Philly index of 22.5, compared to the consensus of 5.

  • iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) up 3.52% to $25.88. Amid strong market conditions today, silver prices are jumping higher, possibly due in part to Scotia Capital increasing their price estimates on metals, with their silver price target boosted from $21 to $26 per ounce. December contracts are up nearly 5.8% to $26.985/ounce on the Comex.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 6.05% to $45.17. The CBOE VIX near-term indicator is 11.8% lower today on strong investor sentiment in the marketplace.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 2.62% to $5.58. Nat gas futures faltering today following data showing an increase by 3 billion cubic feet to 3.843 trillion cubic feet for the week ending November 12, 2010. Bloomberg estimates pegged an increase of 8 billion and 3 billion for analysts and users, respectively.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.70% to $22.74. The strengthening of the euro on a possible Irish bailout is sending the U.S. dollar lower today.
    Investors may also be moving into the more risky market to tack on some gains.
