Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/05: SPY/QQQQ, SLV, XLF Higher; UUP, VXX Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 1.56% to $115.52, and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQQ) up 2.06% to $49.48. Markets are rallying today on a big beat by the ISM Index today (see UUP below), and near-zero interest rates from Japan, as well as a $418 billion stimulus package for the country. The S&P is trading over a pivotal 1150 level. Markets have been in the green all day so far.

  • iShares Silver Trust ETF (NYSE: SLV) up 2.86% to $22.12. Silver is hitting record highs as well today, December contracts trading as much as 3% higher to $22.705/ounce.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 1.60% to $14.63. Financials are booming today, along with the broader market, though one blemish in the sector is American Express (NYSE: AXP). AmEx will be a lone challenger in a suit against the U.S. Justice Department, in which Visa (NYSE: V) and MasterCard (NYSE: MA) settled with yesterday. The suit is alleging that rule put in place by the three merchants prevent retailers from giving discounts to customers. AXP is trading about 3.2% lower in the afternoon session.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.92% to $22.54. The ETF is approaching a 52-week low of $22.02 today, on a nearly 1% decline as the Bank of Japan took measures to stimulate their economy, including cutting interest rates to a range of 0.1% - 0.0%. Additionally, the ISM Services index showed an expansion in the service sector for September, renewing confidence in U.S. economic growth.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 4.15% to $16.65. Also nearing a 52-week low (of $16.44), the CBOE VIX volatility indicator is trading lower as investors are showing a heightened risk appetite today.
