Wells Fargo Winners and Losers of The iPhone 4s
AT&T (NYSE: T) - We believe T is the big winner from yesterday's (10/4) announcement. The new iPhone 4S will support the faster speeds of T's HSPA + network. Additionally, Apple announced that it will continue to offer the 3GS (which is only a GSM handset) and will offer it for free with a contract. We believe that AT&T will continue to be on the only carrier to offer the 3GS. This should help T have greater appeal to both the low and high end than its national peers.
VERIZON (NYSE: VZ) - While VZ will be at a disadvantage vs. T because it cannot support HSPA + or have a low end 3GS, the 4S phone will be a world phone and will offer VZ users the ability to roam abroad.
SPRINT (NYSE: S) - As we have written about, we believe Sprint needs the iPhone in order to maintain relevancy vs. T and VZ. We believe recent press reports regarding the "bet the farm" on the iPhone theory for Sprint are significantly overblown. With Sprint's unlimited offering still in the market place (unlike T and VZ) this should be a meaningful marketing differentiation/advantage for S vs. the Big 2.
TOWERS - Yesterday's announcement is favorable for the towers. Adding
Sprint as a third iPhone carrier will likely lead to increased data usage. We also believe that Apple continuing to offer the 3GS and to offer it a lower price point is positive for iPhone adoption and additional growth in data usage.
