Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox Was Top Seller at Two Key Retailers on Black Friday (SNE)

While Sony (NYSE: SNE) revealed that it has sold over 2.1 million PlayStation 4 (PS4) units since the middle of November, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is definitely not out of the running for hottest selling video game console this holiday season.

The WSJ, citing data from InfoScout, reported on Monday night that Microsoft's new Xbox One and outgoing Xbox 360 accounted for 61 percent of all console sales at big-name retailers Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT) and Target (NYSE: TGT) on Black Friday. The Xbox One accounted for half of all console sales.

Sony's PS4 and outgoing PlayStation 3 (PS3) accounted for 15 percent of console sakes at the two retailers, while Nintendo's Wii U made up about percent of sales.

InfoScout noted that Microsoft's strong showing could be attributed to a few factors, including limited supply of the PS4 at retail locations and Wal-mart discounting the Xbox 360 from $179 down to $99 for Black Friday.

One Microsoft spokesperson told the WSJ that the company continues to sell everything it puts in stores, while a Sony rep didn't respond to a request for comment.

Last Monday, retailer GameStop (NYSE: GME) noted that demand for both consoles was strong and at the top of customers' wish lists, but did not provide specific sales numbers with the comments.

Shares of Microsoft are lower Tuesday morning, while Sony is flat in early trading.
