Microsoft (MSFT) Hits Bittersweet 1M Sales Mark in First 24 Hours of Xbox One Availability

November 25, 2013 6:59 AM
News of the Xbox's death was greatly exaggerated, it seems.

Reports out late last Friday had Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) selling over one million Xbox One units within its first 24-hours of availability.

The company said last Friday that sales surpassed day one Xbox 360 sales and setting a new record for Microsoft.

We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world, said Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, Xbox. Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season.

Notably, the Xbox One launched in 13 markets, while Sony (Nasdaq: SNE) released its PlayStation 4 console in just the U.S. and Canada at launch. Sony also said that over one million units were sold in the first 24 hours. The PS4 will expand into Europe, Australia, and South America on November 29th and move to Japan in February.

One analyst from Baird sees unit shipments of 2.5 million to 3.0 million in Q4.

Microsoft is up nearly 0.7 percent Monday morning.
