Tesla registrations drop 24% in California as hybrids gain ground
Investing.com -- Tesla Inc. saw a 24% decline in first-quarter vehicle registrations in California compared with the same period last year, according to a report released Tuesday by the California New Car Dealers Association.
The drop reflects a broader shift in the state's automotive market, where zero-emission vehicles accounted for less than 14% of all new vehicles registered during the quarter. Meanwhile, gas-electric hybrids grew to represent about 21% of the market, according to the dealer association, citing data from Experian Automotive.
Despite the decline, Tesla's Model Y remains the top-selling vehicle in California, followed by the Toyota Camry, which is a hybrid.
As federal incentives for electric vehicles have been reduced, Governor Gavin Newsom has introduced $200 million in state subsidies to support zero-emission vehicle adoption.
