Apple (AAPL) restricts employees use of ChatGPT and other AI tools - WSJ

May 19, 2023 10:12 AM EDT

iPhone maker Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is restricting the use of ChatGPT and other external artificial intelligence tools for some employees, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal Friday.

The WSJ said a document it has seen, and its sources told them that the tech giant has made the move as it develops its own similar technology, while it is also concerned workers using the programs could release confidential data.

In addition, Apple has reportedly told employees not to use Microsoft-owned GitHub's Copilot, which automates software code writing.

When people use AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, data is sent back to the developer to enable improvements, which then opens up the potential for a company's private data to be unintentionally shared.

Apple isn't the only company to have barred its employees from using external artificial intelligence tools, with the WSJ stating that JPMorgan Chase and Verizon have barred the use.
