Weirdest Things Ever Spotted On The Subway

Subway systems have been around since the 1860s when the London Tube (also known as the London Underground) was opened. Back then, the subway operated using steam locomotives. Today, a couple of decades into the twenty-first century, trains are far faster and more advanced.

While subways have made our lives easier and more convenient, city-dwellers know just how crazy things can get on these speedy trains. On this list, you’ll find some of the most hilarious, wackiest, and strangest things ever spotted on subways around the world.

1. He’s Heading To A Duel

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $80 for the costume*

The expressions on the faces of the two people sitting next to this would-be knight say it all (though we’re going to guess that they are tourists, as they lack the usual New York City indifference to weirdos).

He's Heading To A Duel @Demilked_com/Pinterest He's Heading To A Duel @Demilked_com/Pinterest

This man is ready for a duel—or perhaps a part in another Game of Thrones WBD show. He has his helmet, armor, and embossed shield ready for action. Woe betide any mugger who tries to mess with him.

2. Just A Guy And His Pet

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $50-$150 for a pet boa imperator*

Here, we can see a guy, his pet, two random rolls of hundred-dollar bills, and a bunch of horrified-looking subway-goers. From what we know from National Geographic episodes, this man appears to be holding a boa constrictor.

Aren’t they supposed to be deadly? This guy and his snake are two pals, and there’s no telling where they are heading. Perhaps they’re going to wreak havoc on Gotham City by freeing the other snakes from the zoo.

3. Not Scary At All

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $20-$50 for the costumes*

The funniest thing about this photo is the suited man on the far right pretending as though he has no idea that Chucky and his bride are sitting next to him. Universal’s Chucky franchise is super popular, and it has been the fodder for many Halloween costumes.

Or perhaps these two just like dressing up like Chucky and the Bride of Chucky on a regular basis. The subway is a no-judgment zone, so long as you’re not doing anything illegal (and even then, there’s barely any judgment).

4. The Nun (Subway Edition)

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $50-$80 for the costume*

The Nun is a horror movie from WBD that will freak out even the most jaded of horror-movie-goers. Even though critics panned it, The Nun, a story about demons and nuns and priests, made $366 million at the box office.

And it inspired this person, too. This person dressed up as a terrifying, convincing version of the demon-possessed nun. Perhaps he has the wrong audience, as the men with him in the subway look amused, not scared.

5. Aftermath Of A Fight

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: Some wigs/weaves, apparently

According to the person who posted this photo, this scene was the aftermath of a TKO smackdown. There was a fight while waiting for the subway, and it appears some ladies lost their hair.

We wonder what the fight was about, as you have to be pretty ticked off to rip someone’s hair out. The NYC subway is not a place for the faint of heart—you might want to brush up on your boxing skills before catching a ride.

6. Bedtime

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $500*

Someone was tired of waiting for their train to get there, so they moved a bed down into the subway. It’s hard to tell whether this is some sort of performance art display, or if this person really just wanted to nap.

You couldn’t pay us to fall asleep in the subway waiting area, as so much crazy stuff goes on there. Not a day goes by where there isn’t a headline from Fox, CNN, NBC, or CBS about a new, weird event underground.

7. BOOKS

Location: Unconfirmed
Est. Cost: $3-$10 a chick*

On this list, you’re going to see a plethora of random animals people bring onto the subway, and this bird is one of the tamest ones. He’s being carted around in a box that says “BOOKS,” and he’s poking his head out to take in the sights.

He doesn’t look too unhappy, it seems. It’s not clear where this took place, but we doubt this person got caught. Train drivers have enough to worry about; they’re not paying attention to fowl. Want to

8. Sitting Politely

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $1,200-$2,500 for a Great Dane puppy*

This gigantic dog is sitting politely, so we don’t see the problem. This must have taken place before New York City’s rule that you could only bring your dog onto the subway if it fit into a bag (something people found workarounds for, of course).

This pup is quite well-behaved, and we’d dare to say he is better-behaved than a lot of the humans riding the subway. For his good behavior, his owner owes him a toy or treat from Chewy.

9. Merry Christmas

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $100 for the costume*

If you don’t want to head to Home Depot or Lowe’s to pick up a Christmas tree, one will come visit you on the subway for convenience’s sake. This festive man was spotted on the subway, bringing cheer to all.

We admire the dedication of the look, as it must have been a thousand degrees underneath that Christmas tree suit. He even has pants decked out to look like logs; the costume had to have cost at least $100.

10. He’s On His Way Home From Work

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $1,500-$3,000 for a bulldog puppy*

This fat, tired bulldog (don’t they always look fat and tired?) is on his way home from a long day’s work, and he’s being carted around in a baby stroller. This is something you definitely don’t see every day, even in New York.

One of the things we’ve noticed about animals on this list is that a lot of them are better-behaved than the humans. They aren’t fighting or doing anything illegal; they’re all quite well-trained and docile.

11. The German Way To Fix Broken Doors

Location: Berlin, Germany
Est. Cost: $500-$1,000 to build*

Broken subway door? No problem, if you’re in Berlin, Germany. The city known for its history, art, and nightlife is also known, apparently, for its ingenuity. This broken subway door was bricked up, leading to an effective fix.

The Berlin U-Bahn, as it’s known, is the city’s rapid transit system, a major part of how people get around. Of course, as it is located in Germany, the U-Bahn almost always runs like clockwork, according to tourists.

12. Is That Legal To Have?

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: Who knows?

This man is casually walking around with an airplane door, possibly taken from a commercial Southwest flight or a private plane. Is this even legal to have? How did this guy even get one?

Is That Legal To Have? @Google/Pinterest Is That Legal To Have? @Google/Pinterest

And, why does he have it? There are so many questions, and we have no answers. That’s just the nature of the subway system. You see really strange, bizarre things, and you just have to create your own narrative about them.

13. “The Balloon Bandit”

Location: London, England
Est. Cost: $1-$2 per animal*

The Balloon Bandit has become someone of a social media presence, and you can find his antics on Instagram and YouTube. When you think of a bandit on the subway, you might feel concerned.

"The Balloon Bandit” @Demilked_com/Pinterest "The Balloon Bandit” @Demilked_com/Pinterest

But this is no purse-snatcher. Instead, as you can see from this photo, the Balloon Bandit’s main crime is making blow-up balloon animals and tying them to the subway handles for people to find and pop.

14. This Man’s Intense Bird Shirt

Location: New York City, New York
Est. Cost: $15-$25 for the shirt*

We’ve scoured Amazon to try to find a copy of this intense shirt for those bold enough to wear it, but we can’t find one. This man’s getup is one of a kind, and it is a testament to ornithology.

This Man's Intense Bird Shirt @Demilked_com/Pinterest This Man's Intense Bird Shirt @Demilked_com/Pinterest

This angry-looking bird’s eyes appear to stare into your soul. This bird shirt caught the attention of one subway rider, who just had to post it because it was so arresting and difficult to forget. Godspeed, birdman.
