Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have enjoyed glittering careers ever since bursting onto the country music scene in the ‘90s. But even more famous than their multi-platinum albums and number-one singles is their incredible love story.

The couple have been going strong since 1996, but there have been a few bumps along the way. Join us as we reflect on one of the most solid marriages in music history, from the very beginning right up to the present day. It’s been a wild ride, full of tours, personal battles, and the bright lights of Vegas.

Two Rising Stars

It might be hard to imagine it now, but back in the early ‘90s, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were fresh new faces making a stir in the music business.

Being country artists, it was only a matter of time before their paths crossed. While Faith and Tim had both heard of each other through the grapevine, they had yet to meet. It would be an appearance on the New Faces Show in Nashville in 1994 that would set the wheels of their romance in motion.

The chemistry was apparent from the very beginning, but the road to true love wasn’t paved with daisy dukes and cowboy boots. Faith and Tim had to overcome some hurdles first that weren’t easy to get over by any means. But, nothing good ever comes easy.

Right Woman, Wrong Time

When the pair first locked eyes, it was clear there was an instant attraction. However, Faith had just been burned, with the embers of a previous relationship still simmering to a cool.

And McGraw, on the other hand, was in a committed relationship with Kristine Donohue. Tim would later recall seeing Faith for the first time. “For me, there was an intense physical attraction. I guess my girlfriend saw it in my eyes. She said, ‘I don’t want you around her.’”

There was no doubt that sparks were flying, but the stars weren’t aligned. It was a case of right woman, wrong time for McGraw. Nothing romantic transpired between the pair, who kept it strictly friendly, not realizing what would happen in two short years…

Faith Hill knew she had a powerful voice, regularly performing at churches as a teenager. At 17, she formed a band that played at local rodeos. By 19, she moved to Nashville, determined to become a country singer. She auditioned to be a backup singer for Reba McEntire but didn’t make the cut.

Despite this setback, Faith didn’t give up on her dream. She quit college and continued to pursue her music career in Nashville.

Interestingly, Reba McEntire faced a tragic loss in 1991 when a plane crash killed seven of her band members and her tour manager. If Faith had joined Reba’s band, she might have been on that ill-fated plane, making her rejection a twist of fate.

Faith Rocks Elvis Tribute

In 1994, Faith Hill had already snagged two Number One hits but was still a rising star. That year, she brought down the house on an Elvis Presley tribute special with a lively rendition of “Trying to Get to You,” embracing her Mississippi roots. Her voice, full of southern charm and spirit, was on point.

With a talented band and a groovy beat, Hill let her vocals soar. The performance was all about simplicity—just a great band, a classic song, and Hill’s dynamic voice.

Her charisma and talent were on full display, hinting at the huge fanbase she would soon gather. The magnetism that would soon draw legions of fans was evident.

Spontaneous Combustion

Two years passed with the stars leading their own separate lives, occasionally crossing paths on the awards circuit. By this point, both Faith and Tim had hit albums under their belts.

When Tim bit the bullet and asked Faith to open for him on his Spontaneous Combustion Tour in 1996, it seemed like perfecting timing. For McGraw, it was. He had split from Donohue and was single, but Faith had moved on with her life.

She had found love again with record producer Scott Hicks and what’s more, they were already engaged. Faith embarked on the tour with the best of intentions, but it soon became clear that she couldn’t fight the attraction she felt to Tim. It was an impossible situation that would lead to heartache for Hicks.

This Kiss

Performing and spending so much time together was a catalyst for Tim and Faith. They had been fighting this attraction for years and were finally thrown together to see where it could go.

Faith was conflicted, knowing she had a man to go home to, but accepted the invitation to Tim’s dressing room after a show. Tim, after years of waiting, finally kissed her. It was electric and signaled the start of something wonderful. Faith had some big decisions to make.

The singer left Hicks and went all in with Tim. She later recalled, “If someone is going to judge my character because I was engaged to somebody and then I left him for somebody else… I can’t control that. But I wasn’t about to let Tim slip through my fingers.”

Love at First Dumpling

How exactly does one country star ask out another? Apparently, the first “official” time McGraw invited Hill out on a date was undeniably Southern and sweet. It was over some homemade dumplings.

“Tim brought me chicken and dumplings. He came to my house unannounced. He knocked on my door, and he had a bowl of homemade chicken dumplings. He said, ‘I made these myself. They’re homemade from scratch. He had the bowl covered in aluminium foil.”

The cherry on top of the Sundae? He even brought a fork and a spoon to cover his bases. Tim also presented the chicken dumplings with cornbread, the mark of a true Southern gentleman. It’s clearly a moment that sticks out in both of their minds as the time they really knew it could be love.

Broken Families, Mended Hearts

Despite their obvious physical attraction, Faith and Tim’s connection ran deep. As they started dating and building a relationship, they learned more about each other’s upbringings.

Faith was adopted, and while her family was loving and solid, she always felt like she had a “gypsy” spirit that didn’t fit in. Tim, on the other hand, was born to a high school senior with a famous baseball star father that wouldn’t admit paternity. Both of them felt like something was missing.

“I knew I had that instability and dysfunction in me, from the way I grew up,” McGraw mused. “And when I met Faith, I knew I needed her in my life to keep me stable, solid, and on track.” Once they found each other, it was clear that both of them were holding on for dear life.

In His Father’s Footsteps

Without initially knowing about his dad’s legacy, Tim McGraw was naturally drawn to team sports. In 1985, he enrolled at Northeastern Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe) on a baseball scholarship. He often sat in with country bands at clubs like the Rusty Nail in West Monroe.

Unfortunately, a knee injury during a game forced him to abandon his dreams of going pro.

Luckily, Tim had also picked up a guitar while in college, which steered him toward an equally high-profile career. Instead of hitting home runs, he hit the charts. This twist of fate also led him to meet his soulmate, Faith Hill, proving that sometimes a curveball can lead to an even better path.

Trailer Houses and Lipstick Kisses

Although the couple had only been together for a relatively short amount of time, it was apparent that they had found a love to last a lifetime.

Instead of hanging around, Tim decided that he wanted to make an honest woman out of Faith. In a dressing room on June 26, 1996 in rainy Colorado, Tim got down on one knee and popped the biggest question of his life. Faith didn’t answer him straight away.

After going onstage to perform his set, McGraw went back to his dressing room to see a message on his mirror. The words, “Yes, I’m gonna be your wife! I love you,” were scrawled on it, surrounded with lipstick kisses. Tim still has that mirror to this day.

Taking it Public

Although their relationship had been years in the making, Tim and Faith had yet to make any public appearances together. To them, it had been a long time coming.

But, to everyone else, it looked like a whirlwind romance that came out of nowhere. Tim and Faith went from the frying pan and into the fire when they attended the Andre Agassi Grand Slam for Children event in Las Vegas. It made their relationship Hollywood-official.

Many were surprised at the match and there were some that denounced Faith for leaving her fiance for McGraw. Despite the naysayers, they were determined to begin their new life together. The sooner they could get hitched and make things concrete, the better! There was no sense in waiting any longer.

Award-Winning Couple

In 1997, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s duet “It’s Your Love” was so successful that it stayed at number one for six straight weeks. The song garnered numerous awards, including several from the Academy of Country Music Awards, and became their first top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

For Faith, however, the song meant much more than just commercial success. “It [doesn’t] feel like anybody else was really watching,” she said, emphasizing the personal connection they shared through the music.

One amazing pledge the couple made was never to be away from each other for more than three days, showcasing their deep commitment to each other.

A Welcome Surprise

Little did fans know that Faith and Tim were already harboring a little secret. Not only did the couple have to plan a wedding…

…But also the arrival of their first child, too. Faith discovered she was pregnant just months after the stars started dating. The news was so exciting and welcome, but they kept it under their cowboy hats. Tim and Faith had something else they were working on, first.

On October 6, 1996, the couple invited friends and family to a softball game in Rayville, Louisiana. Their unsuspecting guests didn’t know they were actually going to witness the nuptials at a surprise wedding. The singers finally tied the knot. By this point, Faith was three months pregnant with a little girl. Their family was just starting.

May-be Baby

May of 1997 was a fantastic month for the newlywed couple. They were flying high as one of the country’s most powerful pairs, and welcomed their first daughter, Gracie Katherine.

While most parents might be bogged down in dirty diapers and sleepless nights, Tim and Faith had work to do. They released their first duet single, “It’s Your Love.” The single went wild, topping Billboard’s Hot Country songs chart for six weeks.

Not only did the fans love it, but so did their peers. In fact, the track was so highly regarded that it won the Best Single, Song, and Top Vocal Event of the Year award at the Academy of Country Music Awards, while also scooping the gong for Best Video, too. Things had never looked better for the couple.
