The jewelry business is alive and booming, with more and more crafters coming up with intriguing designs each day. Everyone knows that the right piece can elevate an outfit – but did you know there are some jewelry makers out there that are really pushing the envelope?

We’re not talking about the latest runway pieces from Givenchy, but the strange oddities that crop up on the internet. The most bizarre jewelry in the world will have you scratching your head, wondering if you’re behind the times, or if fish necklaces and bug farm bracelets from Etsy really are the next big thing in fashion.

1. Planter Necklace

Materials Used: Wire, ceramic, dirt, plant
Where Sold: This Is Why I’m Broke
Estimated Cost: $35*

We all know that people have gone a tiny bit plant crazy over the last few years. It’s never been more trendy to be a “plant mama” and fill your home with all sorts of potted wonders. So, what do you get for the plant lover that has everything? This necklace might be a good start.

Who doesn’t want to wear a plant around their neck? It’s not something you’ll see on Kim Kardashian’s Instagram page, but that doesn’t mean it won’t catch on someday. Plants purify the air, so maybe it’s good to have a tiny microclimate attached to you at all times in this day and age.

2. Bolognese Necklace

Materials Used: Resin, metal
Where Sold: iifake
Estimated Cost: $40*

Does looking at this necklace make you hungry for a plate of pasta, just like mama used to make? We don’t blame you. It looks real enough, but the craftsmanship isn’t being questioned, here. Would anyone actually wear this as a bonafide accessory while leaving the house, or is it purely for novelty?

It brings a whole new meaning to “wearing your dinner.” We have to admit that there’s something quite intriguing about the way the fork is entwined in there. Is it genius, or is it a messy statement that’s best left in the box?

3. Snake Earring

Materials Used: Resin, metal
Where Sold: Etsy
Estimated Cost: $25*

Have you always loved the look of snakes but been too afraid to actually get a real one? You’re not alone, but there’s a way you could keep the slithering serpents close to your heart – or head – without actually having to touch the real thing.

Just hop over to Etsy and splash around $25 on one of these twisty ear cuffs that look quite charming. It’s a strange concept, but for snake lovers, it’s actually quite interesting. What’s more, there are plenty of sellers that churn things like this out, so there are lots of designs to choose from.

4. Fried Chicken Necklace

Materials Used: Resin, metal
Where Sold: Poshmark
Estimated Cost: $37*

Fried chicken is god-tier when it comes to fast food, but most of us just settle for buying a bucket, eating it, then pretending like we never deviated from our diet plan. That being said, there are some people that are really unashamed of their love for the morsels of deliciousness.

Sony artist Nicki Minaj was once spotted wearing a pink chicken wing necklace, so would this giant hunk of chicken be something that she would wear, too? If it’s calling your name, you can buy it on Poshmark for just $37. That’s a finger-lickin’ good price.

5. UFO-Lifting-Cow Earrings

Materials Used: Plastic, acrylic, alloy of brass, zinc
Where Sold: @Froppin on Etsy
Estimated Cost: $11.95*

We love these quirky earrings, which cost $11.95 on Etsy from seller @Froppin. The old “UFO lifting cow into a spaceship” gag never gets old, and that is what is depicted on these handmade, lightweight earrings.

The “aliens want your cattle” trope is one we’ve seen in movies and on television countless times. It’s a truly American trope, and a strange one, as why would aliens care about tractor-beaming livestock?

6. Toilet Paper Earrings

Materials Used: White beads, glue, metal
Where Sold: Ebay
Estimated Cost: $6*

A lot of strange things happened in 2020 that wouldn’t usually happen in a normal year. People went wild for toilet paper, cleaning out the shelves in grocery stores across the globe. A lot more people also started crafting to pass the time- could this be where the idea for these earrings came from?

We might expect to see toilet paper dangling from the bottom of a shoe, but to purposely place little beaded rolls onto your ears seems a little bit excessive. That being said, they aren’t all that expensive to buy and can be picked up from eBay for around $6. At least that way, you’ll never run out.

7. Skeleton Hand Piece

Materials Used: Silver/metal
Where Sold: Amazon
Estimated Cost: $10*

Do you totally love Halloween and can’t get enough of all things creepy? Then look no further than this incredible skeleton handpiece. Tons of different companies make designs like this, including some on Amazon which sell for around $10.

They’re intriguing to look at and eerily fashionable, especially in October. A bracelet clasps around the wrist, while the “bones” are attached to the fingers with rings. It’s a wonderful way to spruce up a Halloween costume or add a little extra pizzazz to a formal outfit…if you dare.

8. Chin Bar

Materials Used: Silver
Where Sold: Wolf & Badger
Estimated Cost: $283*

Fashion trends come and go, changing with the seasons and the years, only to come back around. But, every now and then things pop up that don’t become mainstream at all. These chin bars fall into the latter category. Sold at an impressive $283 a pop, they’re supposed to be “chic and daring compliments to your lower lip.”

If you’re not brave enough to get your lip pierced but still feel like your face needs some metal, then maybe this MYL Berlin creation is just the thing for you. You can get in on the trend first and plaster pics all over your Instagram.

9. Body Pieces

Materials Used: Strong metals
Where Sold: Jennifer Crupi
Estimated Cost: $200+*

These strange pieces were made by artist Jennifer Crupi with one goal in mind. Apparently, wearing one of these pieces is supposed to help you look more attractive as it changes the way your body language comes across.

Needless to say, Crupi caused quite the stir with these metal contraptions which were likened to torture devices from yesteryear. Thankfully, they haven’t been seen in all the shops and never became the latest must-have trend. We can’t think of why. Still, points for effort and originality – even if the models in the pictures were the last ones to wear them!

10. Necklaces For Dogs

Materials Used: Various
Where Sold: Unknown
Estimated Cost: Over $10*

Who says your dog can’t be glamorous, too? Jewelry for dogs is a real thing, and we can’t say we’re surprised, as carrying little dogs around in oversized designer bags has been a thing for decades. The next logical step was to bling out your little canine companion.

The dog looks quite pleased with itself, to be wearing such a nice pearl choker (though not too tight, of course). You can buy dog jewelry on Etsy—where else?—and from sites like Amazon. Note that vets advise taking the jewelry off ASAP if your dog scratches at it or seems irritated by it.

11. Cat Hair Necklace

Materials Used: Cat Hair
Where Sold: Etsy
Estimated Cost: $20*+

Cat lovers are a unique breed of people that will go above and beyond for their feline friends. That being said, it’s only natural that something odd would spring up out of this love affair. Cat hair jewelry is fast becoming a real thing.

Crafty cat lovers have been busy collecting the cat hair and turning it into wearable necklaces like this one and beyond. It’s a strange world we live in, but there’s clearly a market for it that can’t be denied. It’s far from the purrfect gift – unless you know someone that really loves cats.

12. Steak Necklace

Materials Used: Resin/plastic, paint, metal
Where Sold: Onch Movement
Estimated Cost: $40*

Lady Gaga certainly caused quite a stir when she wore that meat dress to the MTV movie awards in 2010. While the singer/actress has toned down her looks since then, the impact she left on the fashion industry never really died down. That’s probably why brands like Onch Movement in LA continue to create meat-inspired jewelry.

For those that just can’t stand to be away from a beloved cut of steak for even a split second, there’s this incredible necklace that looks just like the real thing – only, it won’t ever go off. The only downside is that you don’t get to choose if it’s medium, rare, or well done.

13. Face Gems

Materials Used: Metal gems, crystals, glue
Where Sold: Area
Estimated Cost:
$100*

The spring 2020 runway was full of different trends, and one such trend was facial gems. Area had a selection of facial stones at New York Fashion Week. This three-dimensional makeup is actually pretty easy to do. Makeup artists at Fashion Week just glued crystals to models’ faces with reckless abandon.

Piotrek Panszczyk and Beckett Fogg founded Area in New York City. Since then, the brand has become a forefront in unexpected, unique jewelry. Hair, body, and face jewelry from Area always look very trend-setting. It’s easy to see why they were featured on the runway at New York Fashion Week.

14. Beer Ring

Materials Used: Resin, paint, metal
Where Sold: Etsy
Estimated Cost: $20*

Pouring out a cold one on a hot summer’s day is a time-honored tradition for some people, but why not keep that Friday feeling close to you all-year-round by investing in a ring like this? That way, the next time someone asks you if you need a beer, you can laugh coquettishly and say, “I’ve already got one!”

When that joke gets old you can put the ring away or give it to one of the grandkids to enjoy as part of their dollhouse. Honestly, there’s a lot to be said for novelty rings that go way beyond the design. It’s a fun little oddity, but we can get down with this one.
