Ah, rich people. There’s something to be said about amassing so much money that you become disconnected from the way we regular people live. If you’re tired of entitled rich people, then you have come to the right place.

This is the article for Walmart shoppers, average Joes, and regular people to laugh at these honest, slightly-unhinged tweets about delusional rich (or wannabe rich) people. The top earners in America tend to be disconnected…and these tweets on X prove it.

1. Thrift Store Shopper

Year: 2021

Grace on X had to have a weird conversation with her boss after she “bragged” to one of her coworkers of her thrifting prowess. Of course, for most of us, that wouldn’t be a big deal. Who doesn’t love a good bargain, whether it’s at Target or Family Dollar?

But, this woman’s boss took exception to her talking about thrifting, pulling her aside to tell her that she was making him look bad, as though he didn’t pay her enough. Spoiler alert: according to Grace, he did not, in fact, pay her enough.

2. Bad Way To Start A Date

Year: 2021

One time, X user Clint Reeve picked a girl up for a date. Before leaving, he met her father, who sounds like a real piece of work. When Clint admitted he didn’t live in Encino, a wealthy area of California, the father was “disgust[ed].”

To make matters even worse, the pair had to then push Clint’s mother’s car down the street to get it to start. Though this might seem like a bad way to start a date, perhaps it’s not—after all, would you want that as a father-in-law for the rest of your life?

3. Charming Charlie’s

Year: 2021

Remember Charming Charlie’s? That accessory store was super popular a few years ago, though, now, it’s permanently closed. Unable to hang on like Claire’s, CC’s went out of business because it was drowning in debt and couldn’t compete.

When LA Lainey on X told a girl that she got her cute purse from the store, she said the girl looked at her as though she was “devastated.” Who knew? Something inexpensive could actually not be hideous (well, everyone knew but rich people).

4. No, The Island

“I went to St. Lucia and thought it was lame.” That was what one friend told a girl named Meagan on X. Meagan, understandably, thought that the girl was referring to Catholic school, joking in response that she wasn’t surprised the girl was a goth.

Then, her friend looked at her “dead in the eye” and said, “No, the island.” St. Lucia is an eastern Caribbean island where resorts cost as much as $400 a night. That’s a third of a month’s rent or a car payment for most people.

5. Oh No, Not Financing

Most people finance their cars, no matter whether they are driving a vehicle made by General Motors or Mercedes Benz. While, for most of us, that’s no big deal, it seems that rich people aren’t too fond.

On X, one person talked about their rich friend telling them that they bought a previously-owned car. They seemed ashamed that they had to finance it, dropping their voice to an almost-whisper to relay the bad news.

6. Not Throwing Out All Your Clothes?

Year: 2021

After high school, Jen on X said that she went to a “private, rich college.” While there, she made some friends that were well out of her tax bracket, judging from her tweets. One of her friends was “shocked” that she hung on to her clothes at the end of the year.

She didn’t buy an entirely new set of clothing? How shocking. Apparently, her friend wasn’t able to keep even one “favorite” shirt. Imagine having money to spend like that, rather than hang onto shirts from high school. Seems a bit wasteful.

7. Not A Mint Jelly On Lamb Fan

Year: 2021

Mint jelly is a staple that you can buy for around $5 to $12 per jar. For a lot of people, that just isn’t in their budget. Such was the case for Ginger Zoe, who was offered mint jelly by a friend. That friend was shocked when she didn’t know what it was.

“That was not a staple of my food stamp and free lunch childhood,” Zoe replied. There is definitely a food divide in America. Some can load up a $200 cart at Whole Foods with no problem, while others struggle to make it work even with government assistance.

8. Breaking A $100

Year: 2021
Credit: @ZakiaXSmith/X

While attending NYU, a school that costs an absurd amount of money, @ZakiaXSmith’s roommate asked her if she could break a $100 bill. A college kid in possession of a $100 bill is shocking enough, but NYU does have a lot of wealthy students.

The roommate needed cab fare, and she was shocked when Zakia told her she couldn’t break it, as she only made “$90 a week.” “She just stared at me,” Zakia said about her roommate, as though the thought of not having a bunch of twenties on hand was unbelievable.

9. I’ll Get Right On That

You all know the divide between the younger generation and boomers, and each generation thinks the other one is clueless about money. Millennials and Gen Z’ers often complain that their parents are out of touch with how expensive things are.

Case in point, @schauer_me’s tweet about how her mom, a doctor, encouraged her to save up that $7 in her bank account and pull up her bootstraps and find a place to live. Gee, if it were that easy. $7 is barely enough to buy you a meal at McDonald’s nowadays.

10. So Relatable

On X, @wright_laron told a story about how he did a private stand-up comedy show, only to come face to face with the cringe-inducing sight of rich people trying to be relatable. After explaining he was a mover, a woman tried to relate to him in the most awkward way.

She told him that her family owned shares in the Mayflower Moving Company, a national mover based in New York. While that’s sort of the same thing, the scale is not remotely close, making this entire interaction feel out-of-touch.

11. Wow, How Fascinating

Year: 2021

One time, X user @sandbothe was eating dinner at the house of a Washington Post editor, when he got a taste of how out of touch media elites are. After finding out that @sandbothe had worked at Walmart, the editor called it a “fascinating experience.”

He said that the X user should “write about it,” as though working for Walmart was some exotic thing that not many people experience. Meanwhile, Walmart is the U.S.’s largest private employer, with 1.6 million associates.

12. Destination Weddings Strike Again

Year: 2021
Credit: @lixanthippe/X

There have been entire sagas written about why destination weddings aren’t a great idea. For one, they are usually expensive. Secondly, they are almost always inconvenient. Liz on X said that she was invited to one across the country.

As a single mom with three jobs and not a lot of cash flow, Liz couldn’t make it. Her friend’s response was rather flippant, as she said, “Oh, I’m sure you’ll figure it out.” Imagine being that insensitive and disconnected.

13. That’s A Fair Point

Year: 2021
Credit: @PattyUp624/X

What do you think about this tweet, posted by @PattyUp624? Patty once asked a person if they did Black Friday shopping, only for the person to reply that, as they could afford “full price,” they bowed out to let people who need discounts shop those sales.

Was this an out of touch reply? Or was it thoughtful? Some might consider it to be the latter, as it’s someone avoiding a discount sale so as to let people who need reduced prices take full advantage of them. It depends on your perspective, really.

14. Because Live-In Nannies Are So Cheap

Year: 2021
Credit: @regina_peavler/X

Regina Peavler on X said that she was talking to her boss (always a good indicator that something financially-insensitive is about to be said), who asked her and her husband why they didn’t have kids.

She replied that it would be hard, thanks to their commuting, working, and money situation, only for the boss to reply that she should just get a live-in nanny. The question itself was rather insensitive, and her commentary only made it worse.
