We all know that it’s always best to get your hair done by a professional, but even the pros get it wrong sometimes. We also know that it is not always possible to get to the salon, and in that case we have no choice but to do our hair ourselves, or to entrust a family member to do it for us, resulting in some really questionable looks.

In this post we reveal some of the worst haircuts and styles we’ve seen over the last few decades, and there are some really bad ones! From wacky waves to quirky quaffs, rest assured that no matter how bad your hair looked during lockdown, these guys and gals had it worse.

1. Real-Life Disney Villain

Who Paid the Price: Unknown
Est. Cost of Haircut: $40*

The thing about this haircut is that it’s technically very hard to achieve. It takes a lot of precision and a very slight hand in order to create the straight lines and the fade. The styling also took a long time, with the elaborate blow dry which looks like some kind of seashell.

The problem is twofold. The first issue is taste level – which is subjective, but definitely questionable. The second issue is that it will only look like this for about two or three days, a week at most before the sharp lines fade as the shaved hair grows out. Worth it? Only you can decide.

2. Misguided Justin Timberlake

Who Paid the Price: Justin Timberlake
Est. Cost of Haircut: $120 – $250*

JT has been known over the years to change and experiment with his looks. His curly locks are not an exception and he has never shied away from a new hairdo. While lately, his look is more streamlined, back in the early 2000s he sported some interesting gems.

Who can forget when his hair looked exactly like an uncooked pack of two-minute noodles? Or the time he bleached the top half but not the bottom, making him look like a frothy cappuccino. Not to mention the cornrow era, we can all just pretend that didn’t happen.

3. Superfan

Who Paid the Price: Unknown
Est. Cost of Haircut: Up to $400*

This is another look that takes a LOT of work. The haircut is the first step, then bleaching all the hair, then adding neon color, and then you have to make it all stand up. The burning question is, how do you make it so tall and firm?

Superfan @esolanyi / Pinterest.com Superfan @esolanyi / Pinterest.com

Well, the answer is with a mix of sugar water, egg whites, gelatin, and glue (yep). With all that it should stay up for a good week or so. The next burning question is how does she sleep so as not to ruin the tower of hair that took so long to create?

4. Too Tall?

Who Paid the Price: Unknown
Est. Cost of Haircut: $200 – $300 for wigs and hairspray *

Premier of Trolls the movie perhaps? While we can only hope and pray that this image is totally fabricated, one can only wonder with a strange sense of admiration (and confusion) about the braided eyebrows.

The brows could act as a fly swat if you lived out in the country and flapped the brow braids around like a cow or a horse who swats flies away with their tail. Or you could hang your glasses from them like a glasses strap. All this without even discussing the tall mop on the top of her head.

5. Hello, Professor

Who Paid the Price: Unknown
Est. Cost of Haircut: $25*

There comes a time in life where, in the words of Elsa, it’s best to let it go. This would be one of those times. The sad, lonely bangs would be happier if they were set free and shaved clean.

This is when one fully appreciates the value of honest friends. Sometimes we see ourselves through a slightly tinted lense and need someone to point out when we have a bit of spinach in our teeth, or when our hairline looks like a second pair of eyebrows at the top of our forehead.

6. Why, Nicki?

Who Paid the Price: Nicki Minaj
Est. Cost of Haircut: $500 – $600*

Nicki Minaj is the opposite of a wallflower. That old expression that describes a shy girl who is quite in the corner – that’s not Miss Minaj. Any fan of hers would not expect any less than a giant pouf of hair with leopard print fringe and sideburns.

In fact, anyone who knows Nicki Minaj would be more concerned if she didn’t come out with a loud and unique statement piece like this one. Tasteful? Well – that’s subjective, and let’s be honest, in the music world it pays more to be noticed than tasteful.

7. The “Reverse Dad”

Who Paid the Price: Father and Son Duo
Est. Cost of Haircut: $20 each*

The best thing about this picture is that the son’s haircut was super trendy not too long ago, which begs the question: Did they even notice? The idea that they could have literally the opposite haircuts without realizing it is pretty hilarious.

One might say it is even more hilarious if they in fact did know. Picture it, going into the hairstylist and explaining that you want your haircut to fit literally into your dad’s haircut if they were a puzzle. Opposites attract?

8. Rare Robert Pattinson Misstep

Who Paid the Price: Robert Pattinson
Est. Cost of Haircut: $40*

If you were a tween in the late 2000s or early 2010s then you probably had a crush on Robert Pattinson and were obsessed with the Twilight Saga. The Brit with blue eyes and a dreamy gaze enchanted basically everyone and the film series went on to grow over $3.3 billion worldwide.

Pattinson has always been chic with an effortless style and elevated look. This, however, is an exception. Hey, we can’t all be perfect all the time, right? The messy greaseball in place of his usually slick hairdo looks like it’s gone unwashed for several weeks and then had a small bowl of grease poured over it. It’s ok Edward, we will forgive you.

9. Nicole Kidman Has Learned Much Since Then

Who Paid the Price: Nicole Kidman
Est. Cost of Haircut: $80*

Those of us who are lucky enough to not have had social media in our teens and twenties will be able to hide the shameful fashion blunders of the past inside shoeboxes full of old pictures in the back of the closet. Famous people in the ’80s don’t have that luxury.

Poor Nicole Kidman will have this ‘poodle’ look following her to the end of times. We can’t blame her though when you’re in the movies someone else is paid to do your hair and the stars themselves don’t get to choose how they look. And it came out in 1983, so … it’s all forgiven (but not forgotten).

10. No Thanks, Armie Hammer

Who Paid the Price: Armie Hammer
Est. Cost of Haircut: $0*

The star of Call Me By Your Name and Rebecca sports an off-center Mohawk for this (rather embarrassing) selfie he posted on Instagram during quarantine. The picture was posted alongside an image of the clippers he used with hair that had fallen on the floor around his feet.

This counts as actual evidence that he cut it himself during lockdown, which means it is exempt from judgment as those were desperate times and no professionals were actually working. If it were under any other circumstances though, the ‘slightly to the left’ Mohawk would be simply unforgivable.

11. 80s George Clooney

Who Paid the Price: George Clooney
Est. Cost of Haircut: $20*

By George! There are few folks out there who simply never look bad. Even back in the days of Return of the Killer Tomatoes in 1988, with his poofy, curly hair, Mr. Clooney was still easy on the eye. Let’s be honest, with hindsight, no one really looked good in the ’80s, did they?

There is no arguing though, that by the time the ’90s came around he looked 100 times better. With his short-cropped haircut and salt and pepper color, there is no denying that Clooney is swoony.

12. That One time with Shia LaBeouf

Who Paid the Price: Shia LaBeouf
Est. Cost of Haircut: $15*

There was that time once when Shia LaBeouf clipped a braid onto his short, cropped hair making it look like a mullet that came straight outta prison. Not the cool kind of mullet we are seeing on the streets today, ala Miley Cyrus, more like her dad Billy Ray back in the day.

The star has had many twists and turns in his career, and was even once called a style icon by Kanye West, who fancies himself as a bit of an icon too. For whatever it’s worth, the braided tail would be better left at home next time.

13. David Beckham Took a Chance

Who Paid the Price: David Beckham
Est. Cost of Haircut: $120*

David Beckham, the champion of bending it like, well, Beckham, is known for his football career and his Posh wife. Covered in black and white tattoos, the footballer is like British royalty, always in the news and now the next generation of Beckhams are making headlines with his firstborn, Brooklyn, about to tie the knot.

One thing he’s not usually known for is style blunders. Truthfully we can’t all be perfect all the time, so when digging up past pictures of Mr. Beckham we found the time he slipped and fell, figuratively speaking of course.

14. Pink Ricky Martin

Who Paid the Price: Ricky Martin
Est. Cost of Haircut: $120*

She bangs, she bangs! This is another quarantine hairdo by the Livin’-la-Vida-Loca Ricky Martin. He posted this picture on his Instagram along with an important message about staying home during the pandemic to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

“Pink hair don’t care” said every influencer everywhere, but Martin clearly does care and we applaud that. Going back to the hair though, the celeb has more recently bleached his beard white a la Slim Shady, which is arguably more questionable than the pink pictured above.
