There’s a hack for almost anything nowadays and we can’t say it’s a bad thing. Over the past few years, one particular hack niche has been rising up through the ranks. The internet just can’t get enough of weird and wonderful ways to mix things up in the kitchen.

Some of these food hacks have gone viral on apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook for good reason. Whether it’s adding mayo to cake mix, making the perfect giant omelet, or creating a DIY ice cream sandwich, you have to admit that these creations are a stroke of genius.

1. Use tortilla to make a 5-minute pizza

What you need: Tortilla, cheese, tomato puree
Purpose: Quick pizza

Pizza is a wonderful thing, but you don’t need us to tell you that. The only trouble is, making it from scratch can be a lot of hassle. Next time you want to whip up something cheesy, just grab some tortilla wraps. Lay one flat in a skillet, and prepare to get crafty.

Spread tomato puree on the top, sprinkle with cheese and watch it become a melting pot of deliciousness. Not only does it taste good, but it’ll save you a fortune as you’ll successfully avoid ordering Domino’s Pizza.

2. Make your own giant-sized cereal bowl

What you need: Cereal in box, scissors
Purpose: To save the dishes

Cereal isn’t just an awesome breakfast food, it’s a delightful snack to eat at any time of the day. There are so many different types to choose from that everyone has their favorite, from Cinnamon Crunch to Rice Crispies.

Regardless of if you’re a General Mills or Walmart’s own fan, this hack is for you. If you want to eat a whole box of cereal, take some scissors and an unopened pack. Cut a large square in the side of the box, then cut the same shape into the cereal bag. Pour milk in and you’ve got your own cereal swimming pool.

3. Create your own gourmet ice cream sandwiches

What you need: Large cookies, ice cream, sprinkles
Purpose: The perfect ice cream sandwich

Did you pop to the store and forget to pick up ice cream sandwiches? Or maybe you went to the store only to find that they were all out. Whatever the case, if you’ve got large cookies and a pint of ice cream, you’re good to go.

Take the entire pint of ice cream and cut it with a serrated knife, going straight through the tub, cardboard and all. In theory, it should give you the perfect circle shape to sandwich in between two cookies. Just be sure that the ice cream is frozen and not slightly melted, otherwise, you’ll have a lot to clean up.

4. Use frozen onions when chopping

What you need: Onion, freezer
Purpose: To stop tears

Even amateur cooks know that onions make you cry when you’re chopping them. There are numerous ways that supposedly help to avoid this, from sucking on spoons to wearing glasses. This solution is a lot more practical.

If you pop your onions into the freezer about 20 minutes prior to chopping, the chances of you weeping throughout the entire task is minimal. It has something to do with the juices and how they become less able to spread through the air to punch you right in the tear ducts. Just check out Google if you don’t believe us!

5. Save time by roasting garlic in the microwave

What you need: Microwave, garlic bulbs
Purpose: The perfect, quick roasted garlic

Who doesn’t love the taste of roasted garlic? Adding it to different dishes is like giving it a little sprinkle of magic, but don’t faff around with tin foil and waste gas by turning the oven on. Instead, pop a trimmed bulb on a small microwavable plate.

Add two tablespoons of water, a drop of olive oil, and a small amount of salt. Then stick it in the microwave, set the timer for eight minutes, and sit back and relax. When it’s done, you’ll be able to squeeze the roast garlic out easily.

6. Pre-heat your baking sheet

What you need: Hot baking sheet, veggies
Purpose: Speed up cooking time

Preparing veggies is one of the easiest parts of making a meal, but there’s always something that can be done to make the process better. When you chop up your veggies to roast, pre-heat a sheet in the oven as you work.

That way, when you put the freshly-bought Walmart veggies in the oven, the pre-heated sheet helps them to cook faster and also gives them a bit of extra crispness when they’re done, so you get the best of both worlds! Don’t forget to season as well to take it to the next level.

7. Use the microwave for this poached egg hack

What you need: Measuring jug, egg, ⅓ water, ½ teaspoon vinegar, microwave
Purpose: Perfect poached egg

Egg lovers know all too well that poaching an egg isn’t easy. You can follow all the YouTube tutorials you want, but the chances are mastering the art of poaching isn’t going to be instant…unless you try this hack, of course.

Fill up a measuring cup with ⅓ of water, ½ a teaspoon of vinegar, and one egg. Stick it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds and just watch the magic happen. Then, when you’re done, share the good news on Facebook to break the cycle of pain for others, too.

8. Your toaster can make the perfect Qeuesadilla

What you need: Tortilla wraps, toaster, filling of your choice
Purpose: To toast quesadillas

Making quesadillas might seem like a good idea to some, but who wants to get the skillet out and make a ton of mess? If you just want the food without any of the fuss, then this hack is definitely for you. Just fill tortillas with the desired filling of your choice and fold them into parcels.

When that’s done, stick them in a toaster and watch the magic happen. The tortillas hold the filling so it doesn’t leak all over your appliance, and it tastes better than just grabbing a Walmart sandwich to go. Plus, the possibilities are endless!

9. Grill Fish over lemons

What you need: A good cut of fish, lemons, grill
Purpose: To stop fish from sticking to the gril

Grilled fish is perfection, especially when the sun is shining and you’re looking for a distinctly Mediterranean lunch. However, fish has a tendency to stick to the grill which can spoil the experience, especially when you’re faced with a drastic clean-up afterward.

So, next time you reach inside your refrigerator for the salmon you picked up at Kroger, take out the lemons, too. Put the lemons down on the grill first, then put the fish over it. Not only will the lemons stop the fish from sticking to the grill, but they will infuse it with a lovely, fresh flavor.

10. Make the best flourless pancakes from sweet potato

What you need: Sweet potato, eggs, cinnamon
Purpose: Health pancakes

Pancakes are a staple breakfast food, but they’re not the healthiest thing to eat every day. Luckily for us, there are tons of flourless pancake hacks out there that save the day, including this one. All you need for this is sweet potato, eggs, and cinnamon.

Just mush the ingredients together and spoon them onto a hot griddle. In no time at all you’ve got delicious fluffy pancakes that are ready to be sprinkled with sugar, drizzled with syrup, or covered in bacon. You don’t get these at Target.

11. Use a straw to quickly remove stems

What you need: Strawberries, straw
Purpose: To remove the stem

Strawberries are amazing fruits, but getting rid of the stalk can be boring and time-consuming. Not to mention that cutting them off actually ends up wasting a fair bit of strawberry unless you’re painstakingly careful.

Instead of messing around with that, just take a clean straw and push it upward through the middle. The stalk will easily come out, leaving you with nothing but strawberry goodness, which is just the way it should be. This particular hack has been shared millions of times on sites like Facebook.

12. Make thick and delicious pasta with this one-pot pasta sauce hack

What you need: Pasta sauce, pasta
Purpose: To eliminate the need to pre-boil pasta

Most of us boil pasta in a separate pot while we make up the sauce in another pot. Then, when both are ready, we mix them together – but are we missing a trick? The answer could be yes. Instead of boiling pasta by itself, using the sauce to cook it could save a lot of mess.

All you need to do is heat olive oil, chicken broth, butter, cream, and garlic in a saucepan. After a little while add the pasta, and let it bubble away together. Not only is this an incredibly tasty dish, but it’s one that doesn’t require using every pot in the house to make.

13. Add sour cream to your mac n cheese

What you need: Box mac and cheese, sour cream
Purpose: Even tastier pasta

Whipping out the box of mac and cheese that has been lingering in the back of the cupboard for a while may seem like a great idea, but did you know there’s a way to make it better? Instead of using milk like the box says, use sour cream instead.

The result is a deliciously flavorsome dish that’s even creamier than it is with milk. If you’re feeling fancy you could even throw in some other additions like sweetcorn, onions, and other veggies. Either way, it will be worth it!

14. Add mayo to boxed cake mix

What you need: Boxed cake mix, mayo
Purpose: To make a richer cake

Adding mayonnaise to any sweet dish might sound like something toddlers do when left alone for five minutes, but that’s not the case. Mayonnaise is actually a pretty adaptable condiment that can be used in a variety of ways. This is just one of them.

Next time you’re making a box cake, add some mayonnaise to the mix. This simple addition makes the cake taste richer, and like it never came out of a box at all. Out of mayo? You can also use yogurt, melted ice cream, or sour cream and it will have the same effect.
