Concept cars are one of the coolest parts of the automotive industry, used to show off new technology, styling, and other high-end production techniques that an automaker is offering. Concept cars usually don’t make it to production, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t interesting to look at.

Automakers use concept cars to gauge consumer reactions to their new, high-tech capabilities. If consumers are overwhelmingly responsive and positive to a concept car, automakers like Ford might just decide to go and put it into at least limited production, like the ones on this list. Here are some of the most forward-thinking concept cars out there.

1. Toyota LQ Level 4 Concept Car

Predicted Release Date: TBA
Predicted Price: Unreleased

This new Toyota car wants to be your friend. Toyota said that it designed the LQ with Level 4 artificial intelligence to build an “emotional bond” with the driver. The high-tech concept car is developed with Panasonic, and it has a valet parking option that is totally automated. The robo-car is able to hunt for and locate its own parking spot.

The AI assistant is called Agent “Yui,” and they are designed to personalize your driving experience. The Toyota concept car can even tell when you are stressed out by changes in your heart rate and perspiration level—truly next-level stuff.

2. Apple Car

Predicted Release Date: 2024
Predicted Price: $55,000*

The 2020 Apple Car was long-rumored to be happening, but it wasn’t until relatively recently that the tech company confirmed it. The Apple Car will be priced at a base of around $55K. The car has been in the works since 2014, and not a lot of specs have been revealed. Its planned completion date is late 2024.

Apple is planning to make its car electric and self-driving. It hired 5,000 new employees to work on the car, and it made every single one of them sign a non-disclosure agreement, barring them from telling us anything about the futuristic car.

3. Chevrolet FNR Concept

Predicted Release Date: TBA
Predicted Price: $95,000*

Though its initial design was revealed to the world back in 2015, Chevy’s stylish and very sci-fi FNR is still one of the most talked-about concept cars in the industry. Possibly because its potential release date for sale has been delayed time and time again for the last half-decade.

With its unique top-swinging doors, reclining seats and touch-screen controls, this incredibly edgy car stands out from the flock. Auto makers at Chevrolet have promised that the FNR will be equipped with both an automatic driving mode as well as a manual driving option. Let’s just hope the roads of the future are equally equipped to handle them!

4. Sony Vision-S Concept

Predicted Release Date: N/A

The Vision-S debuted at the CES 2020 in what some publications called the “most surprising part” of the car show. The Honda Tomo Concept car is one of the most futuristic-looking vehicles on this list. It is a compact electric vehicle, and it does well in both urban and rural environments. Predicted Release Date: 2021-2022
Predicted Price: $250,000*

Nissan’s futuristic concept car, the IMs, made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in 2019. This is a totally new type of car for the company, as it is an elevated sports sedan. It uses Intelligent Mobility technology (hence the acronym). The sports sedan gets 483 horsepower.

The cabin of the vehicle has several digital screens, with Motor1 describing the exterior as “chiseled” and the interior as “futuristic.” The sports sedan uses a new type of interior space design that the company predicts will be necessary as automatic self-driving cars become more and more common.

8. Audi AI: TRAIL

It has the same styling as the lunar rover, and it uses drones that work like headlights, lighting the trail ahead. The electric vehicle has 33.5-inch tires. The yoke steering wheel is really the only thing on the dashboard, and this futuristic, somewhat outrageous car, gets 13.5 inches of ground clearance, meaning you can ford water.

Predicted Release Date: 2022
Predicted Price: $1.5 million*

Described by Wired as a “shapeshifting future van,” the Mercedes Urbanetic is a cargo van that also could probably function as a ride-sharing vehicle. It can house, for example, 353 cubic feet of Amazon packages or up to twelve passengers. The vehicle needs only to stop to charge its batteries. The van can swap bodies to accommodate its cargo, be it packages or people—hence the description of the Urbanetic as somewhat of a shape-shifter.
