Expensive Tanning Fails That Will Make You Want To Stay Home

If there’s one thing that’s true about the people in most countries around the world, it’s that they love to get a tan. Around two-thirds of people get a tan each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (who doesn’t like that stat too much, understandably).

But, as we all know, tans don’t always turn out bronze and beautiful. This list contains some of the most hilarious tanning fails around, from interesting-looking sunburns to tans caused by mishaps with fake tanner (probably) bought on Amazon for $10.

1. What Could She Have Been Wearing?

What Happened: A geometric tan line that looks crazy

What could this woman have possibly been wearing when she got her tan? This is one of the neatest, cleanest tans on this list, but it is thrown off by the geometric tan lines that make her skin look like wallpaper from Sherwin Williams.

Her bathing suit must have been an off-the shoulder, strappy affair to cause this tan line so neatly. If only she had worn something different; then, this tan would actually be perfect and not a “fail.”

2. Crocs Are Unforgiving

What Happened: Croc tan lines

Crocs are great, if you’re not going to actually wear them in public. They make for good pool shoes, as they are waterproof and durable. That said, don’t forget to put sunscreen on your feet (a commonly-forgotten area).

People forget to put sunscreen on their feet all the time (same with their hands), which is a bad move, as both the feet and hands are super sensitive. Don’t end up like this guy with his Croc lines; wear sunscreen everywhere.

3. Matching

What Happened: He and the dog match

Well, at least this person’s feet aren’t burnt, the way we’ve seen on this list. This person clearly kept their Nikes on all summer (or Adidas, who knows?), as their feet are white as snow.

Meanwhile, their calves look as though they’ve been bronzed and beautified by the sun. As a result, this guy matches his dog, as the pup itself has white paws and tan-ish legs…though his are just the result of fur, not excessive tanning.

4. Don’t Cry With Fake Tanner

Credit: Refinery 29
What Happened: A girl cried after applying fake tanner

If there’s an important life lesson you should take from this article (in addition to the one about wearing sunscreen at all times), it’s to never cry when you are wearing a fake tan. Make sure, therefore, to put on the fake tanner at a time when you’re emotionally stable.

Don’t get into a fight with your partner, watch sad videos on Instagram, or do anything else, unless you want to end up like this girl, whose photo went viral after showing the hazards of tearing up while wearing tanner.

5. Fake Tan Foot

Credit: The Sun
What Happened: Someone spray tanned their foot for some reason

This evenly-applied fake tanner looks as though it has been done properly, without a lot of splotches or anything like that. The only problem is that it is only on this person’s foot, for some reason.

More than likely, he or she was testing out the spray tan on their foot before putting it anywhere noticeable. That’s a good option, as you’d rather have it look terrible on your foot than your face, arms, and legs.

6. Lazy Application

Credit: @LilJrChicken
What Happened: A guy did his sunscreen himself

This guy, possibly out of some misguided masculinity thing, didn’t want to ask his friends to help him put on sunscreen. As a result, he got this crazy tan, which only exists on one-third of his back.

Now he has a sunburn for his foolishness, as there was no way he could’ve thought that he would reach his entire back himself. Hopefully, next time, he puts aside his pride and asks for someone to rub sunscreen on his back.

7. Murica

What Happened: An American-flag burn

We get patriotism, and everyone wants to be as patriotic as the next guy. But, in the case of this person, he might have taken it too far. It’s not clear how he got this unique pattern, but it probably had to do with his shirt.

He might have been wearing a thin, white shirt that had color-blocking in a flag pattern. When the sun hit, it roasted everywhere but the ‘Murican flag. There’s better ways to show patriotism on the 4th of July.

8. Sir.

What Happened: A man who tanned way too much

This photo is one that has made the rounds on the Internet; perhaps you’ve seen it before. It went viral-ish because it was so cringe, people couldn’t get over it. Hopefully, this guy has ditched his over-tanning ways.

Whether this tan was caused by fake tanner or a tanning bed is unclear, but this man better hope it was the former, for his sake. To use a tanning bed to this point is a one-way ticket to fast-track skin cancer.

9. Circa 2000s

Credit: Unconfirmed
What Happened: A really overblown tanned look

Perhaps you’ve seen this tanning fail before, as this picture went viral a while ago. It’s been bouncing around the Internet since then, and we’re curious whether this girl kept her uber-tan, uber-blonde, very made-up looks.

This tan is just a hair shy of orange (it’s closer to burnt sienna). This picture just screams Y2K, as that was when a lot of girls were trying to imitate the blonde, fake-tan, skinny-eyebrow look. Glad we left that in the past? Us too.

10. What Color Is This

Credit: The Sun
What Happened: Fake tan gone wrong

A “tan gone wrong” is basically the entire point of this list, and it makes us cringe, too, when we see photos like this. A lot of us have taken embarrassing club photos from time to time, but this is on another level.

What Color Is This @TheSunOnline/Pinterest What Color Is This @TheSunOnline/Pinterest

This picture is another early 2000s relic, we’d bet. This girl has dyed herself an orangey-brown, and it looks as though she left her tanner on way too long. This guy’s white shirt was totally ruined after this photo.

11. Holey Jeans On A Sunny Day

Credit: @OwnLeeYu
What Happened: Sunburned kneecaps

“Holey Jeans on a Sunny Day” might sound like a poetic band name, but we can assure you, the literal meaning of it is quite painful. This girl was wearing jeans with holes in the knees, and the sun took no prisoners.

Holey Jeans On A Sunny Day @boredpanda/Pinterest Holey Jeans On A Sunny Day @boredpanda/Pinterest

Her kneecaps are bright red, while the rest of her legs are white. Perhaps the parents who have been complaining about ripped, holey jeans for years have a point—they aren’t good for you. This photo is painful to look at.

12. Tri-Tone

Credit: @pooter7
What Happened: An evening attempt failed

This tan reminds us of Neapolitan ice cream, for some reason. @pooter7, the person who posted this photo, said that he was attempting to even out a tan he’d gotten the other day (likely the darkest brown one).

Tri-Tone @boredpanda/Pinterest Tri-Tone @boredpanda/Pinterest

The attempt failed, and @pooter7 was left with legs that look like vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice cream. Evening out a tan is always tricky business, especially if it requires you to go back into the sun that burnt you the first time.

13. Way Too Tan

Credit: The Sun
What Happened: A too-tan girl and her comparatively-pale BF

This man had better not kiss this girl, lest he wants a face-full of orangey-brown self-tanner. There’s such a thing as “too tan,” and this girl looks more like an Oompa Loompa than a bronzed goddess.

Way Too Tan @TheSunOnline/Pinterest Way Too Tan @TheSunOnline/Pinterest

We all went through our heavy makeup and tanner phase, only snapping out of it once we saw a photo like this and realized that, wow, it did not look even close to natural. Surely, the same thing happened to this girl.

14. Why Is The Tanner Green?

Credit: The Sun
What Happened: Tanner turned green

This person was trying to turn herself into a bronze goddess, but she went the other way and accidentally morphed herself into the Hulk. This can happen if a tanner is exposed to too much heat or oxygen.

Why Is The Tanner Green? @TheSunOnline/Pinterest Why Is The Tanner Green? @TheSunOnline/Pinterest

You can tell if tanner has gone bad if it is lighter than normal or doesn’t produce color. That’s how you know it isn’t working as it should, and it has begun to break down. When in doubt, throw it out…or turn green.
