When you’re worth millions (or billions) you have the whole world at your fingertips. So, when they’re not busy being investment whizzes, space-travel masterminds, celebrities or CEOs, what do the world’s elite do to entertain themselves?

From producing hundreds of jars of honey a year to knitting, playing the saxophone, and even searching for NASA rockets, the hobbies of these A-listers might surprise you. Some of them cost a pretty penny, while others might cost the same as a Netflix subscription. Which ones would you try?

1. Tom Hanks

Hobby: Typewriter Collecting
Avg. Cost: $200+ per typewriter*
Net Worth: $400 million*

Hollywood’s nicest actor and American treasure Tom Hanks has a lot of interesting quirks to his personality. Aside from his natural talent bringing characters to life on-screen, Hanks has another hidden gift – spotting a valuable vintage typewriter from a mile away.

The Disney actor has a collection of over 100 typewriters of varying ages, having first started the collection in the late ‘70s. Hanks rarely has to search for typewriters these days as he gets gifted them from virtually everyone in the business. Nerdist sent him a 1934 Corona Silent Typewriter and he begrudgingly granted them an interview in return.

2. Warren Buffett

Hobby: Playing The Ukulele
Avg. Cost: $500+*
Net Worth: $74 billion*

With an estimated worth of $74 billion, you might think that Warren Buffett would spend his spare time counting his money and dining on nothing but pure gold plates. While some of that could be true, Buffett’s favorite hobby is much more down to earth – and far less costly.

The Berkshire Hathaway genius has played the ukulele for years. His love of the instrument has become something of a legend, with Buffett even playing a little ditty for interviewers over the years. Of course, he prefers high-end ukuleles made by brands like Mele and Oscar Schmidt.

3. Cameron Diaz

Hobby: Snowboarding
Avg. Cost: $600-$2,000 per trip*
Net Worth: $102 million*

Since leaving the world of acting behind several years ago, Cameron Diaz has been busy getting married and having a baby, while also exploring other business pursuits. That being said, Cameron still makes time to have fun. One of her favorite pastimes is snowboarding.

The ski industry is a booming one, and it’s likely Cameron spent at least $1,000 setting herself up with the best boards on the market. Needless to say, with a net worth of $102 million she can also afford to jet to the best slopes in the world that most of us might only see on a Netflix special.

4. Will Smith

Hobby: Fencing
Avg. Cost: $20,000-$40,000 per year*
Net Worth: $240 million*

Will Smith isn’t exactly the shy and retiring type. The actor has been in more action movies than we can count, so perhaps his hobby isn’t all that surprising. However, the circumstances around it are so Hollywood it hurts. At the 2008 premiere for his movie Hancock, Smith explained that he took up fencing alongside David Beckham.

The soccer star and the Sony actor casually spend time at Tom Cruise’s house. Smith explained that Tom has a dedicated room for fencing, so the three of them get to hang out and work on their fencing skills.

5. Vin Diesel

Hobby: Singing
Avg. Cost: $5,000+*
Net Worth: $163 million*

To fans, Vin Diesel is best known for starring in the long-running Fast and Furious franchise. While it’s true that Vin has certainly made his mark on the action genre, he’s actually got another side hustle in the entertainment business. Diesel has released several singles over the years.

Vin loves to sing so much that he even got his house mic’d out. While it’s hard to put an exact number on what it would have cost him to set up, a home studio can cost anything from $2,000 to $5,000 and beyond. You can catch Vin’s singles on sites like YouTube if you’re curious.

6. Nicole Kidman

Hobby: Skydiving
Avg. Cost: $10,000+*
Net Worth: $182 million*

For some people, the very idea of jumping out of a plane at 15,000 is enough to make them feel queasy and lie down on the floor. For others, it’s just a good time. Nicole Kidman first started skydiving when she was married to fellow superstar Tom Cruise.

Kidman now holds her own skydiving license, meaning that she doesn’t have to jump with a certified instructor but can take the leap all by herself. That doesn’t mean that the Disney star doesn’t still find it terrifying, though. She has previously admitted that it’s the thrill of overcoming the fear that keeps her going back for more.

7. Johnny Depp

Hobby: Collecting Barbies
Avg. Cost: $600+ for rare types*
Net Worth: $109 million*

Johnny Depp has had a glittering career in Hollywood since the 1980s, amassing a fortune of over $109 million. He’s also garnered quite the reputation as somewhat of an eccentric personality thanks to several personality quirks. With that in mind, it’s not surprising he collects Barbies.

Jennifer Garner has always been one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood thanks to her capacity to play both serious and comedic roles. If that weren’t enough, Jen solidified her status as an overachieving goddess when it came to light that she can play the saxophone several years ago.

The star has been known to bust out the saxophone for special occasions, including for pal Reese Witherspoon’s birthday. The clip is still available on YouTube and is worth watching if you haven’t seen it yet.

“I’m actually a real tomboy. A lot of people only see me on the runway, or at parties, or on the red carpet. I’m usually at a pet store or at my ranch or a farm. And I like to go fishing and I like to go look at frogs – like, I’m really random like that.” The former Fox reality star loves the great outdoors.

When Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio co-starred in Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood back in 2019, the world let out a collective shriek. “The first thing I ever loved in my life was a pigeon,” explained Tyson. Tyson reportedly entered the world of racing pigeons soon after, putting his 2,500 birds to good use. Then, years later in 2019, she posted another photo of herself next to a globe with the caption, “We made real-life versions of the snow globe from the Lover video because of course we did.” It looks like this is one hobby Taylor can’t quite get over.
