Founded in 1943 in Amhult, Sweden, IKEA has been taking the furniture world by storm ever since. This furniture company sells and designs its own ready-to-assemble products. IKEA sells not just furniture, but also home accessories and kitchen appliances. IKEA comes out with new products every year, always managing to outdo itself.

As one of the largest furniture retailers in the world, IKEA has redefined the market of home decor. IKEA’s stylish, chic designs and build-it-yourself approach has made this Swedish-founded brand a world leader in terms of both affordability as well as taste. Their iconic warehouse-sized stores alone have become a staple of 20th century pop culture.

So it’s an understandably wonderful feeling to see a brand new IKEA catalog sitting on your doorstep, just waiting to be explored. And now that the 2020 catalog is officially out, we can finally glean some of the standout products we can all look forward to.

1. Skadis Pegboard Organizer

Price: $9.99*

The Skadis Pegboard Organizer, by itself, costs just $9.99. It comes in white, which makes it compatible with any design scheme, anywhere in your house (we suggest the kitchen or your bedroom). The Skadis lets you “keep small items close at hand,” according to IKEA. It can even be used in climates like the bathroom or garage “near your carpenter’s bench.”

If you use it as a desk divider, you can store things on both sides. The product measures 14.25” x 22” and has a 5/5-star rating on IKEA’s website. The Skadis is part of a series, so you can choose accessories from the rest of the lineup to complete your personal storage collection.

Though rails for wall mounting are included with the Skadis Pegboard, IKEA states that different walls need different fasteners. Hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s, or even big-box stores like Walmart, should have the wall-mounting supplies you need.

2. Billy Bookcase

Price: $49-$59*

The Billy Bookcase, which has a surprisingly American name, is one of IKEA’s most popular products in the company’s history. According to IKEA, one Billy is sold every five seconds somewhere in the word. The Billy has been around since 1979, and it has never gone out of style.

The Billy is currently on sale, too! It usually costs $59, but IKEA is running a sale until January 26, 2021 that drops the price down to $49. The Billy comes in three colors: white, birch veneer, and black-brown, which means that it is compatible with any home décor. It measures 31.5” x 79.5”.

The Billy has a 4.5/5-star rating. People love not only the adjustable shelves and simplicity of setup, but also the price. A similar-looking six-shelf bookcase at Wayfair costs $439.99. On Amazon, you can find one for $89.99, which is still far more expensive (and less popular) than IKEA’s Billy Bookshelf.

3. Rosenfibbla shower curtain

Price: $10-$30*

The Rosenfibbla 100% polyester shower curtain is a cute addition to any bathroom. The curtain is floral-patterned. The same designer who created the textiles for the Rosenfibbla also created the Rodarv and Rosenrips. The designer said that they were inspired by “traditional Swedish wool embroidery.”

The designer, Eva Lundgreen, said that she imagined how, back in the “old days,” women would work by candlelight to create beautiful, seemingly-impossibly-detailed designs from vegetable-dyed yarn. The designer said that she tried to emulate “meadows, where beautiful flowers grew” when creating the patterns for this shower curtain as well as the Rosenrips (a duvet cover) and the Rodarv (a cushion).

The price given is a range, as the shower curtain is sold out on IKEA’s website, likely because people love the cute print. The Rosenfibbla is available through resellers on eBay ($25.99) or Amazon, but, especially with the current coronavirus pandemic, there is no telling when the Rosenfibbla will be back in IKEA stores or on its website.

4. Lurvig Pet Bed

Price: $49.99*

No matter whether you have a cat or dog (or rabbit, guinea pig, baby goat, etc.), this Lurvig pet bed will be very comfortable for them. It looks like a miniature hotel couch. The Lurvig costs $49.99 (though the frame itself only costs $27, so make sure that you’re ordering the entire bed).

It is 26.75” x 27.5”, meaning that it can fit a small to medium sized-dog and probably any cat, no matter how fat. If you want to make a larger bed, just fold out the cushion. The Lurvig’s cushions are filled with polyurethane foam and covered with 100% polyester. The cover is removable and washable.

You don’t even have to hand-wash it—it can be machine-washed in a normal cycle. However, you have to line-dry the cover. No bleaching, tumble-drying, ironing, or dry cleaning. For price comparison, a ped bed ordered from Chewy can cost anywhere from $39.99 to $122, depending on what you get.

5. Ikea 365+ Carafe

Price: $4.95*

One of the best things about IKEA is that it not only has cheap furniture; it also has cheap kitchen supplies, and this IKEA 365+ Carafe is one of them. The IKEA 365+ brand is the company’s line of kitchen containers, jars, and other similar products.

Ikea 365+ Carafe @IKEA / Facebook.com Ikea 365+ Carafe @IKEA / Facebook.com

The $4.99 carafe is made of clear glass and comes with a cork. It can fit 34 fluid ounces, and it is 11” high. For reference, the average two-liter bottle of Coke or Pepsi is about 13” high, so, despite the cheap price, the 365+ Carafe can actually fit a lot of liquid in it. It is perfect as a serving piece at the table, or you can use it to store premade drinks in the fridge.

The Carafe is dishwasher-safe, but make sure you remove the lid and wash it by hand. Keep the cork away from constant contact with the liquid to prevent possible bacteria buildup.

6. Kloven Outdoor Loveseat

Price: $159*

The Kloven Loveseat is an outdoor chair that provides the perfect piece of furniture for enjoying breezy days at home. The Kloven costs $159. The measurements of this loveseat are approximately 54” x 32” x 29”.  The Kloven’s cushions are sold separately.

IKEA recommends that you use VARDA wood stain if you decide to re-stain the furniture. The VARDA is most compatible with this product. It cannot be bought at stores like Sherwin-Williams or Home Depot; you have to buy it from IKEA. The VARDA stain costs $6.99. Though some Internet DIY-ers have suggested alternatives to VARDA, we say don’t risk ruining the Kloven.

The Kloven is made of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus isn’t just a favorite panda bear snack; it is also a sturdy, durable type of hardwood because of the plant’s high density of wood fibers. The furniture is also pre-treated with multiple layers of semi-transparent wood stain, which IKEA says helps bring out the “natural expression” of the wood.

7. Kajuta table lamp

Price: $29.94*

This is one of IKEA’s most unique-looking products. The Kajuta table lamp has sold out quickly, as people like this funky green accent piece. The Kajuta’s perforated shade creates a pattern around the room when the light shines through it. The lightbulb is not included (like because of the high chance of breakage during shipping).

Though not included, IKEA recommends that you use an LED E14 chandelier clear lightbulb. You can easily find those at local hardware stores for $10 a bulb or on Amazon for $14.99 for a twelve-pack. The bulbs aren’t meant to be super bright, hence the chandelier lighting recommendation.

One of the most unique features of the Kajuta is its lamp, which, in addition to being perforated, is also made of adjustable powder-coated steel. You can reshape the lamp to create different light patterns on the walls. The bright green accent lamp was designed by David Wahl.

8. Lovbacken Side Table

Price: $59.99*

The Lovbacken Side Table works for pretty much every home design. The side table has a distinctive grain pattern, which means that no two Side Tables are alike. The veneered surface makes the Lovbacken easy to clean, durable, and resistant to stains. Under the poplar veneer is fiberboard.

The veneer is coated with lacquer for extra durability. Plastic feet at the table’s base protect against possible floor-scratching, so you can move it across the floor with no problem. The table, which IKEA designed in-house, has a 5/5-star rating. It’s easy to clean—just wipe with a clean dry or damp cloth.

You should also check regularly that the Lovbacken’s assembly fastenings are tightened. Retighten with a simple screwdriver ($8.98 at Lowe’s and $14.97 at Home Depot) for a quick fix. The Lovbacken might be recyclable or usable for energy recovery, but that depends on the policies in the city you live in.

9. Tekla Dish Towels

Price: $0.79*

The Tekla dish towels have a 4.5/5-star rating on IKEA’s website, indicating that this product is well-liked. And, looking at the price, it’s hard to see why it wouldn’t be. The Tekla dish towels come in white with red trim (compatible with many kitchen designs, as warm colors tend to be the trend for kitchens).

The Tekla dish towel is 20” x 26”. It costs $0.79. For comparison, purchasing a similar dish towel at Target will cost you $1.99. The Tekla is made of yarn-dyed cotton. This means that, as opposed to piece-dyed, the white and red colors will not fade, no matter how many times you wash the Teklas.

The Tekla towels can, of course, be washed in the washing machine on a very hot, normal cycle. You shouldn’t bleach, tumble-dry, iron, or dry clean these towels. Let them hang dry, and be prepared for a shrinkage of around 8% in total.

10. Pruta food containers

Price: $0.99-$5.99*

The Pruta Food Container is an amazing deal that you’re not likely to find anywhere else. The Pruta costs $5.99 for a set of seventeen. Individual sets are likely to cost under $1. The Pruta is “economical,” so much so that IKEA jokes that you can send your guests home with “leftovers” without worrying about them keeping the Pruta.

For reference, an eighteen-piece Rubbermaid set will cost $26.96 at Walmart. The Pruta food containers are made of polypropylene that is dishwasher-safe, saving you time and energy—no hand-washing required! The polypropylene has not had any possibly-harmful BPA added to it, and it is possibly recyclable, depending on where you live.

The Pruta set is also microwave-safe. You can heat food in your Pruta up to 212 degrees. It is freezer-safe as well. Though note: IKEA recommends you leave the Pruta’s lid slightly ajar while in the microwave in order to release steam

11. Stockholm TV Unit

Price: $399*

The Stockholm TV unit (likely named after Sweden’s most beautiful city) is a TV bench that is made of walnut veneer. The legs are composed of solid ash. The TV unit’s walnut veneer pattern is distinctive, and no two products are the same. Each Stockholm has a “unique character,” according to IKEA.

The TV bench works with all TVs, whether you buy yours from Best Buy or Walmart. The TV bench has storage capacity for anything related to your TV, including gaming setups, remotes, or even a stack of old TV Guide magazines.

Under the walnut veneer is made of particleboard, though the back of the Stockholm is composed of fiberboard. To clean, all you have to do is wipe the Stockholm with a mild cleaner and damp cloth. For less intense messes, you can dust it with a dry cloth. Note that the Stockholm comes in two packages, requiring some direction-reading and setup.

12. Oumbärlig 7-piece cookware set

Price: $49.99*

For how shiny and high-quality the Oumbarlig 7-piece Cookware Set is, you would expect it to have a price far higher than $49.99. However, it is not too good to be true, and IKEA, once again, has proved how affordable it is.

A similar-looking product from Macy’s will cost $299 (and that’s after a sale knocking it down from $800). At West Elm, you’ll pay $60 just for one 2.1-quart covered saucepan. The 4.5/5-star IKEA Oumbarlig comes with a saucepan, three differently-sized pots, and three lids.

The Oumbarlig pieces are all made of stainless steel. The base is thick, with one layer of aluminum sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel. The Oumbarlig set can be used on any type of cooktop—even induction cooktops. The cookware set is energy efficient, and its even heat dispersal reduces the risk of burning food or food sticking and causing a difficult cleanup.

13. Mulig Clothes Rack

Price: $9.99*

Two of the best things about the Mulig clothes rack are how inexpensive it is ($9.99) and the fact that it comes in white, which goes with everything. The Mulig can be used anywhere you need it, including damper areas like under covered balconies or your bathroom. The plastic feet on the Mulig protect your floor from scratches.

The Mulig, which has a 4.7/5-star rating on the IKEA website’s Amazon-like ratings system, is made of polyester-powder-coated steel. The tube caps are made of polypropylene. These materials are easy to clean, just wipe them with a mild cleaner and damp cloth.

For less serious messes, you can wipe them dry with a clean cloth or use a duster. This rack is perfect for closets that are running out of space. Or, you can even use it in lieu of a coat rack, if you have a lot of coats to which you need easy access.

14. Blanda Matt Serving Bowl

Price: $9-$17*

The Blanda Matt serving bowls are available in different sizes, and they are made of bamboo, which is wood color that never goes out of style. Bamboo is also renewable, as it is fast-growing, unlike fossil or finite materials. However, if you’re not feeling bamboo for your own kitchen, IKEA also offers the Blanda in metal or glass.

Blanda Matt Serving Bowl @prontoservices / @IKEA.Perth / Facebook.com Blanda Matt Serving Bowl @prontoservices / @IKEA.Perth / Facebook.com

They are available in different sizes, including the most popular 7” and 11” widths. The 11” Blanda Matt will cost you $17, while the 7” costs $9. Note that, unlike dishes you might buy from Target or Walmart, these must be hand-washed only. They cannot be put in the dishwasher, nor are they microwave safe.

Also, IKEA recommends that you do not use metal utensils when using this bowl. Though the bamboo is covered by a clear nitrocellulose lacquer, the metal utensils, over time, will scratch and cause damage to the surface of the Blanda.
