Home Depot is the largest home improvement store in America. It supplies pretty much everything you would ever need to complete a project at home, including tools, construction materials, home décor, and installation services. Headquartered in Atlanta, Home Depot was founded in 1978 and has grown to have 2,285 locations.

Anyone who has ever taken on a big renovation project has probably made a stop at the home improvement mecca. From paint colors galore to lumber in myriad sizes, along with a helpful staff ready to assist with any questions you may have, Home Depot is truly a one-stop-shop for all brave DIYers.

Though you can get really great deals on a lot of home improvement products, there are some key items that you should skip buying at Home Depot. Stores like Home Depot’s main competitor, Lowe’s, as well as department stores like Walmart and online retailers like Amazon, do offer better prices on some of the items you’ll see on this list.

1. Tool Rentals

Average Price: $19-$500*
Verdict: Buy It

There are two main reasons to rent your tools at Home Depot. First, the prices are reasonable, as Home Depot is one of the few places that let you rent tools. Secondly, the tools are high quality. Home Depot has tons of options for tool rental, including aerators, air compressors, nail guns, carpet cleaners, chainsaws, moving/lifting equipment, ladders, power tools, and many more.

The range of prices is usually up to $500, but for large-size tools, expect to pay a little more. The rental scheme is similar to renting a car—you pay by the hour for usage. This one is a “Buy It” for sure.

Even if you aren’t sold on renting the tools from Home Depot, there are plenty of tools available in-store that staff members can help you use. For example, if you’re buying lumber but they don’t have the exact size you need, if you ask a staff member they will be happy to cut it to size for you.

2. Countertops

Average Price: $299*
Verdict: Skip It

While Home Depot does have a wide selection of countertops, you might be able to get a better price at Walmart, which has laminate and instant granite countertops, among other choices. You can also check local, non-brand-name hardware stores for a better price, as Home Depot is a little steep.

Just as an example, you’ll pay $151 for a granite countertop at Walmart for 36 square feet. At Home Depot, one square foot of granite is around $40. The prices might vary, depending on what you want, but you may find that countertops are a “Skip It” at Home Depot.

Often resalers like Home Depot mark up prices, whereas you can find better deals from going straight to the source. Home Depot might be that perfect middle-man for most home renovation situations, making materials accessible to the average person, it’s worth it to hunt down a countertop-specific outfitter in this one instance.

3. Plants

Average Price: $25-50*
Verdict: Buy It

Home Depot is the best place to buy plants. There are 6,118 plants and garden flowers available there, according to the website. You’ll have to check your local Home Depot to see what they have in stock. Additionally, there are 7,152 planters available on the site and 12,535 outside décor items.

All that to say, Home Depot has a wide variety of plant choices and prices. They separate the plant selections by annuals and perennials, and there are also vines, edible garden plants (vegetables and fruits), and trees and shrubs. The prices range from the single digits to the hundreds—trees and rarer plants are more expensive.

While cute houseplant stores are a dime-a-dozen these days, popping up life wildfires, they often overcharge for their foliage. It might be less fun to look for houseplants in a store with less ambiance, but your wallet will thank you.

4. Kitchen Appliances

Average Price: $90-$200*
Verdict: Skip It

Kitchen appliances are a possible “Skip It” on this list, as there likely will be cheaper options elsewhere. Though Home Depot occasionally has deals, like ten percent or fifteen percent off with a promo code, those are mostly online. In-person shopping might be more expensive.

For Dutch ovens, woks, and braisers, Home Depot is a good choice, as those are less conventional kitchen appliances. But for your run-of-the-mill appliances (toaster, kettle, pan, etc.), stick to Walmart or your local grocery store. For example, a two-slice toaster at Home Depot is $15-$30. At Walmart, it’s $10 to $20, with pretty much the same brand names in stock.

While Home Depot-sold appliances are a definite “Skip It”, if you’re there to purchase other items anyways and happen to need a blender, it probably won’t cancel out the savings you’re making on the other purchases. Bottom line is, it’s not worth it to go out of your way to travel to Home Depot for the sole purpose of buying small appliances.

5. Char-Broil Gas Grills

Average Price: $150*
Verdict: Buy It

Ranging from $100 to $300, Home Depot is every dad’s dream. There are tons of grills from which to choose, with brand-names like Nexgrill, Weber, KitchenAid, Dyna-Glo, Monument, and more. There are also grills of every shape and size, whether you’re looking for charcoal, electric, natural gas, propane tank, wood, or propane.

Other competitors such as Costco also have great deals on grills, but these deals tend to be seasonal and are unpredictable. Home Depot is great because not only do they have prices that can’t be beaten, they have the same models available all-year-round.

The grill situation at Home Depot is flexible on price. Sure, some models are more expensive, such as the Cal-Flame two-piece BBQ island and side-bar, which costs $7,106. But many of the grill models retail for a way more reasonable price. There are so many from which to choose, you can’t go wrong.

6. Grilling Accessories

Average Price: $10-$50*
Verdict: Skip It

On the flip side, you can’t have grilling without the accessories, and grill accessories are going to be a “Skip It” from us. Grill accessories such as tongs, silverware, charcoal, and the like are more expensive at Home Depot than they are at bigger stores or even online retailers.

Similar to Home Depot not being the place for small appliances, it’s definitely not a retailer for utensils. While they may carry them in stock next to their grill section, it isn’t what their main focus is as a home improvement retailer, and the price reflects that.

When it comes to grill covers, you might want to stick with Home Depot, as they have the matching grill covers with the ones you pick. But, for accessories, go somewhere else. For example, tongs are $1-$5 at the local dollar store. At Home Depot, they’re $15.84 for just one (BergHOFF, stainless steel meat tong).

7. Ceiling Fans

Average Price: $89*
Verdict: Buy It

With summer pretty much already here, you’re going to want to make sure your fan is working as it should be. If you need a new one, we say go to Home Depot for this household appliance. Home Depot has tons of fans from which to choose, as well as replacement blades and bulbs if you need them.

Not only do they have a wide selection of fans to choose from, but with such a wide customer base around the country, you can know exactly what you’re getting by reading online reviews. Homedepot.com is a wonderful resource to see which products are worth the money, and which ones are not.

Home Depot has exclusive fans that you can’t get anywhere else, such as a 52-inch LED Petersford ceiling fan, that you can operate via remote control. Mercer, Altura, Kensgrove, Mewry, and more are also ceiling fan-makers that have exclusive deals with Home Depot.

8. Humidifiers

Average Price: $40-$100*
Verdict: Skip It

At Home Depot, you might find yourself paying $40-$100 for a humidifier. Other stores, such as Amazon, are cheaper, retailing in the $20-$50 range for a regular humidifier. Most humidifiers on Amazon are in the mid-thirties for the price range. There is a whole section devoted to under-$40 humidifiers that are highly rated on Amazon.

Humidifiers ©BOKEH STOCK / Shutterstock.com Humidifiers ©BOKEH STOCK / Shutterstock.com

At Home Depot, this pricing is steeper. While purchasing a humidifier treatment (Essick Air 32-ounce bacteriostatic treatment) is under $8 there, the humidifiers themselves aren’t cheap. The bestseller at Home Depot is a five-gallon humidifier, which works for 4,000 square feet and costs $150. For anything smaller than that, go elsewhere.

In the same vein as other appliances, this is a big miss. While online retailers sell plenty more affordable options, if you prefer to shop in-store or don’t trust online reviews, you could do a lot worse than spending a few extra bucks on a humidifier though.

9. LED Light Bulbs

Average Price: $1-$4 per bulb*
Verdict: Buy It

LED light bulbs are an absolute “Buy It” at Home Depot. They have pretty much every wattage imaginable, many of which are under the “EcoSmart” brand. The LED bulbs, for a soft, 60-watt, white eight-pack, cost $10.21 ($1.28 per bulb). As is to be expected, the 100-watt, brighter bulbs cost about $3.44 per bulb.

It might seem surprising that light bulbs would be cheaper at Home Depot than on Amazon or at Walmart, or other extremely low-cost retailers, but this another great example of how under-utilized Home Depot is as a resource. Not only are prices great, but they also have a wonderful selection of bulbs too.

If you want to get fancy and buy a bronze wall sconce with a glass shade, that isn’t even that expensive either, at $40.51—and they include the LED bulb. LED bulbs are around 80% more efficient when compared to regular bulbs, wasting only 5% of energy via heat. The other 95% is pure light.

10. Rugs

Average Price: $50-$100*
Verdict: Skip It

You might find that rugs are way cheaper at online retailers or even local stores. At Home Depot, a rug can run you anywhere from $30 to $500. While Home Depot does have a few choices, the higher price makes us say “Skip It” for this option.

Rugs ©QualityHD / Shutterstock.com Rugs ©QualityHD / Shutterstock.com

Other online stores such as Wayfair and Overstock.com have better prices for such decor items and a far greater selection. If you can’t find something you like at one of these massive online discount stores, then you certainly won’t find something you like in Home Depot’s relatively smaller collection.

On the converse, if you want hardwood flooring, you actually can get a pretty good deal at Home Depot. High-quality Home Decorators Collection hardwood costs $58.79 per case. There are also many different shades of hardwood from which to choose. If you’re going to get something for the floors at Home Depot, make it hardwood (not rugs).

11. Patio Furniture

Average Price: $150-$800*
Verdict: Buy It

While you might think that the price is a little steep for patio furniture, the quality is up to par at Home Depot. Also, sets are not overly expensive, as compared with national furniture chains. For example, a four-piece steel patio set from Laurel Oaks is $499. A brown wicker rocking chair by Hampton Bay is $250, and that’s one of the retailer’s newest products.

Outdoor furniture, and furniture in general, tends to be extremely pricey. It must withstand years of wear and tear and inclement weather, and as such it’s worth it to splurge on the more expensive stuff as cheaper furniture will need to be replaced often, adding up to more money spent over time.

Sofas are a little more expensive, costing $649 (Hampton Bay). There are a lot of designers that have exclusive deals with Home Depot for patio furniture, including Hampton Bay, West Park, Home Decorators Collection, and Lifetime, among others.

12. Home Decor

Average Price: $50-$100*
Verdict: Skip It

Though you might find that Home Depot has the occasional online deal (ten percent off with a promo code) for home décor, home décor is likely cheaper on Amazon or at Walmart or a local store (Kohl’s, Tuesday Morning, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, etc.). Also, you’ll find more unique, colorful things there.

Home Decor ©Richman21 / Shutterstock.com Home Decor ©Richman21 / Shutterstock.com

You can tell just by entering your local Home Depot store that functionality is prized over aesthetics; that utility reigns supreme. While most of the things for sale at Home Depot can be used to build beautiful things, they are not inherently decor in and of themselves.

Home Depot’s aesthetic pretty much adheres to a modern trend, which means a lot of their home décor comes in stainless steel, neutral colors, and muted florals. If you like a pop of color or abstract decorations to liven up your living space, Home Depot might not be the place to go.

13. Behr Paint

Average Price: $33.98 per gallon*
Verdict: Buy It

Behr Paint and Home Depot are two peas in a pod, and you’ll find that you get a really good deal on Behr there. For example, their Behr Premium Plus Ultra-Pure White Paint costs $13 per gallon. Home Depot stocks Behr Paint for a variety of locations, not just indoors.

Behr Paint ©melissamn / Shutterstock.com Behr Paint ©melissamn / Shutterstock.com

You can buy industrial/commercial paint, exterior paint, interior paint, and even arts and crafts supplies. Behr is one of the highest-rated painting suppliers in the country, and it is known for making high-quality products. Not to mention, there is every Behr paint color you can think of at Home Depot.

As such, it’s surprising that many standalone paint stores are still in business, with Behr and Home Depot’s paint alliance cleaning up most of the industry. The fact that the paint is such a good deal makes Home Depot the perfect one-stop shop for home renovations.

14. Glidden Paint

Average Price: $10-$130*
Verdict: Skip It

Conversely, another paint brand that you might want to get elsewhere is Glidden. Five gallons of Glidden costs $59.98. Also, Glidden is less highly-rated when compared to Behr. One gallon of Glidden Ceiling Paint costs $13.78, but it only has three out of five stars on the Home Depot website.

Once you see the variety of colors of Behr paint available, you won’t need to even consider buying Glidden paint. Even if you can’t find the exact hue you’re looking for in the Behr section, they’d be happy to mix up something unique for you in the back.

Check the Glidden website for better offers and sales. Also, make sure you test out the paint before you stock up. If you’re set on Glidden, don’t look to Amazon. One gallon of Glidden interior paint and primer costs $40.99. For plain white, you’ll pay $61.10 per gallon.
