Animals are incredible additions to any household. They’re big-hearted members of the family that we love to love – but no one ever said that owning a dog, a cat, or even a parrot was cheap. Not only do you have to worry about the cost to keep them, but you have to worry about the utter carnage they tend to wreak when they’re left alone.

In some instances, dogs have been known to rip entire couches to shreds, while cats are highly-trained blind assassins, ready to strike at a moment’s notice. They may look cute on Instagram but make no mistake – these four-legged critters can destroy prized possessions with just one flick of the paw.

1. Take That Shower Curtain!

What They Broke: A shower curtain
Est. Cost to Repair: $10*

Kittens are gorgeous little fluff balls that offer up hours of fun…at least, for the most part. As every discerning cat owner knows, turn your back for a split second in those first months and you could have a whole world of trouble on your hands. For instance, this kitty thought the shower curtain was some kind of living creature that must be defeated.

Shower curtains might be great at keeping the water in the tub, but they aren’t the strongest of materials. This one was no match for little fluffy’s claws that ripped it to shreds faster than AT&T’s Wolverine.

2. Who Needs A Box Cutter?

What They Broke: A cardboard box

Cats have been around for a really long time, which could be why they often have this strange look of wisdom about them – or, in this case, sheer animal ferocity. This kitty looks less like a darling household pet and more like a prehistoric wildcat looking for its next battle.

The cardboard box was easily defeated with a quick claw and a cutting bite, but by the look of this feline, the box got off lucky. Something tells us this cat isn’t one to sit calmly by the window and pose for Instagram snaps.

3. Knock Knock, Who’s There?

What They Broke: A door
Est. Cost to Repair: $50*

Most dogs are pretty reactive to the sound of someone at the door, but does your pup chew its way through doors? This one does. Nevermind that doors cost at least $50 to buy. This canine isn’t concerned about that in the slightest – but what happened?

Perhaps this good boy didn’t want to be left behind when his parents went to work, or perhaps he just really needed to pee. Either way, it’s turned out to be an expensive day for these owners. Fido probably didn’t get a new toy from Walmart on the next shopping trip, either.

4. Blind-ly Guilty

What They Broke: Blinds
Est. Cost to Repair: $100*

Imagine coming home from a long day at work, only to pull up to your house and notice that something is drastically wrong. Your expensive fitted blinds have fallen victim to the mischievous dog that you once thought you could trust to be alone. Seems silly now, doesn’t it?

What’s more, the dog is still waiting excitedly for you to walk through the door, not realizing it has done anything untoward. Who’s really in the wrong? The dog for costing the owner at least $100, or the human for thinking everything would be okay? It’s time for a Facebook poll.

5. Leveler

What They Broke: Picture frame
Est. Cost to Repair: N/A

Cats are curious by nature, so perhaps it’s no surprise that this feline wanted to take a closer look at the pictures of Buddha hun on the wall. The big question is, did the cat pull the picture down, or was he trying to fix it? It’s a “What came first, the chicken or the egg?” scenario.

Perhaps the most interesting part about this particular snap is that the kitty looks so startled. Were they caught in the act? Are they tracking a toy from Target as it makes its way across the other side of the room? They say a picture is worth a thousand words – or, in this case, a million meows.

6. Don’t Send Me To The Kennel!

What They Broke: Passport
Est. Cost to Repair: $110*

There are some things in life that we know we need to keep safe or it’s going to cause some big problems. Passports are one of those things. We usually keep them in a “safe” spot, but what happens when Rufus mistakes it for his next chew toy?

This dog got hold of this poor owner’s travel documents and decided he was going to use them as a toothbrush. After all, who wants their owners to go on vacation without them, anyway? Kennels are smelly and no one gives cuddles quite like mom and dad. Unfortunately, passports are costly to buy, coming in at around $110.

7. Dog Ruins (And Wears) Towel

What They Broke: A towel
Est. Cost to Repair: $10*

Some dogs like baths while others think they should be allowed to wallow in their own filth for all eternity. As for this dog? Well, it skipped the bath and went straight to the toweling stage, only it chewed the towel to bits and created its very own flannel robe.

We have to admit, it looks like a stroke of genius. Is the towel ruined for humans? Absolutely, but it’s now the perfect dog-drying tool. Really, shouldn’t the owners be thanking this pup for creating something that could make life easier in the long run?

8. Caught in the Act

What They Broke: A couch
Est. Cost to Repair: $500-$1000*

It’s amazing what dogs can actually break when they put their minds to it. It’s not just the odd slipper, but they’re capable of doing real damage. This bull terrier might look like butter wouldn’t belt, but it’s managed to rip its way through an entire couch. In fact, when it was caught it was still paw-deep in the destruction.

There’s no way it’s getting away with this one. Apart from being kind of incredible, it can be really costly to replace an entire piece of furniture. In this case, a decent couch from sites like Amazon will set you back at least a few hundred bucks. Someone isn’t getting any treats for a while!

9. Flan Bandit

What They Broke: A flan
Est. Cost to Repair: $10*

When it comes to baking flans, you’ve either got it or you haven’t. Not everyone can make a perfectly jiggly dessert fit for Sunday dinner, but when it’s done right it’s a complete triumph…until the cat comes along and dips its giant furry head into the side of it.

Somehow, this kitty still manages to escape the wrath of the cook by looking so innocent. After all, it’s nothing a trip to Walmart fix – and just look at those eyes. If this cat ever wanted to sideline as a criminal, it would charm unwitting humans out of millions in a heartbeat.

10. One With Nature

What They Broke: An entire potted plant
Est. Cost to Repair: $30*

Let’s face it, dogs love to dig. It’s as natural to them as shaking their tails, but we don’t mind so much when it’s done outside. This poor potted plant didn’t know what was about to hit it. We don’t know who’s come off worse here, the pooch or the plant.

A decent plant of this size can cost around $30 from stores like Walmart but little Fido doesn’t exactly look like he’s enjoying himself anymore either. After all, he’s come out with a plant pot wedged on his head, and that’s not a good time.

11. Not A Car Fan

What They Broke: A wheel arch
Est. Cost to Repair: $1,000+*

There are many things that dogs are capable of completely destroying, but it’s not very often that we see canines chew through car bodywork. We’re not entirely sure what happened here, but it looks like this badly-behaved buddy took his fury out on daddy’s prize possession.

Not A Car Fan @boredpanda / Pinterest.com Not A Car Fan @boredpanda / Pinterest.com

Car body repairs aren’t ever cheap and judging by the extent of the damage done here, you’re looking at a minimum spend of at least $1,000 – if it can be fixed at all. Even if you can find some parts on eBay it’s not going to be a cheap solution.

12. A Look Of Regret

What They Broke: Couch cushion
Est. Cost to Repair: $100*

There’s something about this photo that really does tug on the heartstrings. Depending on what kind of person you are, you might be feeling bad for the owner’s wallet as they will likely have to shell out $100 on a new couch cushion. Or, you might take one look at this shamed pup’s face and feel like they deserve nothing but a good belly rub.

A Look Of Regret @boredpanda / Pinterest.com A Look Of Regret @boredpanda / Pinterest.com

Clearly, this isn’t an ideal situation for any homeowner to be in. Not everyone has a spare $100 to drop at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. We just can’t help but feel that, even so, this is one sorry doggy that instantly regretted this poor life decision.

13. Cat Vs. Plant

What They Broke: A potted plant
Est. Cost to Repair: $10*

Some cats have the kind of faces that make it impossible to be mad at them, no matter what kind of havoc they leave in their wake. This kitty has one of those faces. Clearly, it got into a fight with a potted plant that wasn’t its fault, and the cat won. Such is life.

Cat Vs. Plant @pau_mpma / Pinterest.com Cat Vs. Plant @pau_mpma / Pinterest.com

By the looks of it, the battle royale could have been a lot worse. For a start, this plant is fixable so it might not mean a trip to the local garden center for a replacement. That’ll teach the potted plant to get in the cat’s way though, won’t it?

14. Casual Rampage

What They Broke: Various household items
Est. Cost to Repair: $5+*

Some dogs can’t be trusted to be alone in a room for five minutes, no matter how well they’re trained. If they pick up a scent that needs following, then there’s nothing to be done but follow it. In this case, this curious pooch got into a cupboard in the sitting room and completely gutted it.

It’s hard to see just what was damaged or how much the cost was, but the real wasted currency here is time. No owner wants to go through a mess like this and spend precious minutes tidying it up. Good job his ears are cute or it could have been a much bitter pill to swallow.
