Celebrities love Halloween just as much as the rest of us do, and the costumes on this list all feature some of our favorite stars’ best costume looks. Their wacky outfits range from spooky to sweet to hilarious, but all have one thing in common: they’re iconic.

While some of the superstars on this list look like they’ve stepped out of a Netflix horror movie, others chose more cutesy outfits. Of course, it wouldn’t be a “Best Costume” list without the couples’ costumes, too. Scroll through this list to see celebrities’ best Halloween looks to get inspired for this upcoming spooky-season holiday.

1. Heidi Klum as a Horror Movie

Year: 2020
Event: Heidi Does Halloween
Est. Cost: $1,000*

Heidi Klum isn’t just one of the most famous supermodels of all time—she’s also a known Halloween fanatic. Really, we could dedicate an entire article just to Klum’s costumes, parties, and horror movies. In 2020, she unveiled her five-and-a-half-minute horror movie titled Heidi Does Halloween.

The movie starred her kids, Leni, Henry, Lou, and Johan, as zombies chasing the terrified model as she dons a series of costumes to try to escape them. The movie is scary, funny, and all too clever. In 2021, Klum released a gorier and even creepier sequel to her Heidi Does Halloween hit.

2. Veronica Lake as a Witch

Year: 1942
Event: Halloween Movie Premiere of I Married a Witch
Est. Cost: Unknown

Veronica Lake (real name: Constance Ockelman) was an American stage, film, and TV actress, and she was famous for her roles as a femme fatale in noir movies. I Married a Witch was one of Lake’s most famous movies, and, for Halloween in 1942, she embodied the seventeenth-century witch.

Her film was released October 30, 1942, and Lake starred a centuries-old witch who, before she is burned at the stake, puts a curse on the family of her persecutors. The curse says that all the men of the family’s future generations will marry the wrong woman. When the Witch is freed 250 years later, she comes back to terrorize her accuser’s family, only to find that her accuser’s descendant is more charming than she expected.

3. Kylie Jenner as Marilyn Monroe

Year: 2019
Event: Instagram Photoshoot
Est. Cost: $500*

Marilyn Monroe remains one of the twentieth century’s biggest icons. Though it has been decades since her tragic passing, we’re still making documentaries, watching films, and dressing as the legendary blonde bombshell. The 1953 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was one of Monroe’s most famous, and it inspired business mogul and reality star Kylie Jenner’s Halloween costume in 2019.

She recreated Marilyn’s look from the film in an Instagram Halloween photoshoot, complete with a pink dress, pink gloves, blonde wig, red lipstick, and a ton of shiny jewelry. The finishing touch is her entourage, a group of adoring men holding red hearts.

4. Harry Styles as Elton “Rocketman” John

Year: 2018
Event: Casamigos Halloween Party in Beverly Hills, CA
Est. Cost: $200*

Harry Styles might not have played Elton John in his biopic (that honor went to Taron Egerton), but he did dress like the singer-songwriter for a Casamigos Halloween Party in Beverly Hills. The party guests included Styles and other huge celebrities like Ryan Seacrest, Cindy Crawford, Jenna Dewan, and more.

It was Harry who stole the show. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer wore a sequined Dodgers uniform, tilted sunglasses, and a hat for his look. The entire outfit was identical to the one that Elton wore in 1975 to perform at Dodgers Stadium, down to the sequined glasses. Reportedly, Elton loved the look on Styles.

5. Adele as The Mask

Year: 2016
Event: Halloween Party in Dallas, TX
Est. Cost: $300*

No one would have recognized Adele on Halloween in 2016, as the superstar singer transformed herself into Jim Carrey’s “The Mask” for spooky season that year. She donned prosthetics, a hat, and a suit to turn herself into the main character from the 1994 hit comedy.

The end result was amazing, and Adele shared a black-and-white photo of her costume with her fans on Instagram. She was only recognizable by her hand tattoo, which read “ANGELO,” the name of her son. Otherwise, she was the spitting image of the superhero trickster so well-played by Jim Carrey.

6. Madonna as Camp Ranger

Year: 2013
Event: 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards
Est. Cost: $300*

We’ve seen Madge in many different costumes, but dressed as a Boy Scout? That was something very new in 2013 when she attended the GLAAD Media Awards. Though not a Halloween costume per se, this was still a crazy celebrity costume that Madonna fans still remember.

Madonna, a huge advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, was making a statement on policies the Boy Scouts held that she disagreed with. She mentioned them in her speech, and her costume helped put emphasis on her point. Madonna was a featured guest at the GLAAD event, which awarded news host Anderson Cooper with its prized Vito Russo Award.

7. The Weeknd as The Nutty Professor

Year: 2020
Event: Kendall Jenner’s Halloween-themed 25th birthday bash
Est. Cost: $500*

We’ve seen singer-songwriter The Weeknd in some pretty wacky looks, but his costume as The Nutty Professor takes the cake. He looks identical to the fictional character, who was played by Eddie Murphy in the 1996 comedy. In The Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy’s character, an obese professor, finds a miracle weight loss drug that has unexpected results.

The Weeknd attended a Halloween party as The Nutty Professor, smoking cigars and dancing to his own music. We got to see his movies in the fat suit, faux double-chin, and bow tie as he danced to his hit single, “Too Late.”

8. Questlove as Elmo

Year: 2019
Event: NBC Today Halloween Celebration in Times Square, NYC
Est. Cost: $200*

Questlove and Elmo, though two completely different characters (one is a musician and one is a famous kids’ star, so to speak), apparently have more in common than we may think. Questlove is an Elmo fan—or, at least, he dressed up like him in Times Square.

The cameras caught a lot of Questlove-turned-Elmo, as the musician was attending NBC’s Today Halloween Celebration in 2019 in NYC. Today’s Halloween celebration is always a huge hit and everyone, from celebrities to local New Yorkers, turns out in force to show off their creepy, spooky, and, in Questlove’s case, silly costumes.

9. Amy Schumer as a Tampax Tampon

Year: 2021
Event: Halloween Costume Promoting Tampax Post-Hysterectomy
Est. Cost: $100*

Comedian and actress Amy Schumer was a spokeswoman for the Tampax brand of feminine care products, and her “edutainment” commercials were so popular that demand soared for Tampax tampons, so much so that Procter & Gamble announced a shortage as a result.

Flash-forward to 2021, and Schumer got a hysterectomy. Still, she stands by Tampax, though she won’t be needing tampons or pads anytime soon. For the Halloween after her hysterectomy, Amy dressed up as a tampon, joking that, even without a uterus, “nothing can stop [her] from wearing Tampax, okay?” Just in costume form, from now on.

10. Kevin Hart as The Rock

Year: 2019
Event: Instagram Photoshoot
Est. Cost: $100*

Everyone knows that Kevin Hart and The Rock are best friends. They’ve been in many movies together, most recently voicing parts in the animated film Superpets. The two seem to love working together, even though they pretend to bicker and fight.

For Halloween in 2019, Kevin Hart trolled his Jumanji costar by mimicking a look from one of the latter’s most famous photos. He wore the same black turtleneck tucked into blue jeans, necklace, and hairstyle to pose for Instagram. As Hart said, he “killed it” with his Halloween costume that year, and we’re sure The Rock had a good laugh over it.

11. Jessica Biel as Justin Timberlake

Year: 2019
Event: Casamigos Halloween Party
Est. Cost: $250*

It’s not everyday we see a wife dress as her husband for Halloween, but that is exactly what Jessica Biel did in 2019 when she dressed up as Justin Timberlake, her husband, during his ‘NSYNC days. She even had the curly wig and sweatsuit to top it off.

Biel stole the show at the Casamigos Halloween Party with her totally-nineties metallic jumpsuit, white sneakers, small blue sunglasses, diamond earrings, and wig. She even had four male friends of her and her husband’s dress up as the rest of ‘NSYNC to back her up. During the party, one amused bystander said that the group rocked the Casamigos dance floor the entire night.

12. Lebron James as Pennywise

Year: 2017
Event: Lebron’s Annual Halloween Party
Est. Cost: $300*

We’ve seen Lebron James dominate basketball courts since he was fresh out of high school. The businessman, NBA star, and activist is one of the most famous athletes in the world. Also, who knew he was so good at dressing up for Halloween?

James was unrecognizable as Pennywise during his annual Halloween party. He was terrifying and looked almost identical to the infamous horror movie character. James’ costume was based on Pennywise from the It remakes, an evil, alien creature known for preying on the fears of unsuspecting kids in the streets of Derry, Maine.

13. Bella Hadid and the Weeknd as Lydia Deets & Beetlejuice

Year: 2018
Event: Heidi Klum’s Halloween Party
Est. Cost: $1,000*

Remember when the Weeknd dated Bella Hadid? The two had an on-and-off relationship from 2015 until 2019 until they ended up finally calling it quits due to, according to their reps, hectic schedules.

Still, while they were together, they had some iconic moments, including one Halloween in 2018 when they went as Lydia Deetz and Beetlejuice from Tim Burton’s 1998 Beetlejuice horror-comedy. The pair arrived at Heidi Klum’s Halloween Party in high-fashion. Hadid’s outfit was far from off-the-rack—she wore a custom-made red wedding dress by Sylvio Roubertto Kovacic that perfectly complemented the Weeknd’s very-accurate Beetlejuice look.

14. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner as The Addams Family

Year: 2018
Event: Halloween Party
Est. Cost: $200*

Few fictional families are as beloved as the Addams Family. There have been many different TV shows, films, and comic strips about this haunted, spooky family that lives in a not-so-macabre suburb. The Addams Family has inspired many Halloween costumes over the years, as you can imagine.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner transformed into Morticia and Gomez from the Addams Family in 2018, and their looks were spot-on accurate. The singer and actress pulled out all the stops for this look, even having their own Addams Family photoshoot. Less than a year after that Halloween bash, the two were married in a secret Vegas ceremony.
