EU auto OEMs face an existential China threat: Who wins and who loses?

Investing.com -- Bernstein has laid out how far Chinese carmakers could expand in Europe, calling it "the most existential question facing the European automotive sector" and naming the likely winners and losers.

Analyst Stephen Reitman said in a note Tuesday that domestic Chinese brands such as BYD and Chery have grown from 1% of the European market in 2024 to 6.8% in the first seven months of 2026, while Chinese-owned European brands like Volvo and MG have reached 5.1%.

He expects the gains to continue, but not at the furious pace of the past three years.

Investing.com -- Volkswagen AG (ETR:VOW) shares fell 7.5%, extending declines after the company cut its fiscal year 2026 operating return on sales guidance to up to 1%, down from a previous forecast of 4% to 5.5%.

The German automaker cited a goodwill impairment related to Porsche AG, a challenging market environment particularly in China, and additional restructuring expenses as reasons for the reduced outlook. The company now expects group sales revenue of around €315 billion, roughly equivalent to the midpoint of its previous forecast range.

Investing.com -- Volkswagen announced Thursday it will cut approximately 50,000 jobs as part of its strategic plan through 2030. The cuts are based on a company-wide survey of future staffing requirements.

The automaker set a financial target of achieving a 9% operating return on sales by 2030, which equals an operating profit of about €31 billion. The company plans to invest €135 billion from 2027 to 2031.

The Supervisory Board asked the Group Executive Board to create a new model for decision-making and group structure at Volkswagen Group.

Investing.com -- Bank of America said the ongoing conflict involving Iran is emerging as a key risk for the global automotive sector, with rising oil prices likely to accelerate the shift toward electric vehicles while posing longer-term demand risks.

The brokerage said uncertainty around the conflict remains high, with scenarios ranging from a near-term ceasefire to prolonged disruption through the second half of 2026. In more severe cases, including sustained disruption to the Strait of Hormuz and regional energy infrastructure, Brent crude could rise as high as $160–240 per barrel.

India reportedly lowering EU car import tariffs to 40%

Investing.com -- India plans to reduce tariffs on cars imported from the European Union to 40% from as high as 110%, as part of a free trade agreement that could be announced as early as Tuesday, CNBC reported on Monday.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to has agreed to immediately lower taxes on a limited number of cars from the 27-nation bloc with an import price exceeding €15,000 ($17,739).

The tariff will be further reduced to 10% over time, making the Indian market more accessible to European automakers like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
