US gas prices climb above $4 a gallon as oil surges amid Iran tensions

Investing.com -- Gasoline prices across the United States rose to an average of $4.10 per gallon today, up from $3.8720 a week ago, according to AAA data.

The jump follows a recent jump in oil prices amid growing military conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Brent crude futures, the international benchmark, briefly exceeded $90 per barrel this morning before falling back below $89.

Regional variations remain substantial. In Alaska, drivers pay around $4.65 per gallon on average, while California motorists face costs of approximately $5.50 per gallon.

EU waives methane law penalties for oil and gas firms for 3 years

Investing.com -- The European Commission told EU governments on Monday to waive penalties for oil and gas companies that violate its methane emissions law for three years. The decision follows pressure from the U.S. government to reduce the regulations.

Starting January 2027, the law was scheduled to require imported oil and gas to meet emissions monitoring rules equal to Europe's standards.

The Commission stated that EU countries should not impose penalties on companies that break the methane law in 2027, 2028 and 2029. The decision aims to prevent supply disruptions, according to the Commission.

Investing.com -- An Indian crew member remains missing after a Cyprus-flagged container ship was struck in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, according to Cyprus's Deputy Ministry of Shipping on Monday.

The vessel, named GFS Galaxy, was hit by an unidentified projectile while passing through the waterway early Sunday, Cypriot authorities said.

The crew abandoned ship using a lifeboat, and the Oman Navy rescued 23 crew members, Cyprus's Deputy Ministry of Shipping said.

The missing crew member holds the rank of third engineer, the ministry said.

"The vessel is currently under tow toward the nearest safe anchorage at the UAE port of Khor Fakkan.

Investing.com -- The cost of electricity from natural gas power plants in the United States reached its highest point in at least 17 years, according to data released Monday by Lazard Inc.

The levelized cost of energy for combined cycle gas plants rose to $90 per megawatt-hour in 2026, up from $78 the previous year. The figure represents the highest level since 2009, when the cost stood at $83 per megawatt-hour. Lazard tracks the long-term electricity price a power plant needs to break even.

Investing.com -- Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said today he does not expect a sustained rise in energy prices for the rest of the year, despite renewed conflict in the Middle East.
