European Food/HPC stocks: Q3 earnings preview

Q3 appears unlikely to deliver the hoped-for acceleration, analysts at Bernstein said in their earnings preview for European Food, and Household and Personal Care (HPC) stocks, even as the past two years have witnessed subdued growth across consumer staples.

The poor growth is behind the substantial derating of the sector, as well as concerns among investors that the sector could be structurally broken from an investment perspective.

Bernstein notes that while the worst hit areas of consumer staples, like alcohol, are not within the firm’s coverage, even their Food and HPC names, barring a few exceptions, have faced similar pressures.

Deutsche Bank says AI is creating both opportunities and risks for consumer staples companies, but the bank identified three clear beneficiaries that are emerging as the technology reshapes the sector.

The bank highlights Anheuser-Busch InBev, Coca-Cola Hellenic, and L’Oreal as the best positioned to benefit from the shift, though with different investment implications.

Analyst Mitch Collett argues that AI could generate significant cost efficiencies across product development, marketing, logistics, pricing, sales force management and sustainability.

At the same time, consumer-facing applications like AI shopping assistants could erode brand loyalty and create new pressures on pricing.

“For Consumer Staples companies, AI shopping assistants could drive
