IBM and NASA release open-source AI model for lunar surface analysis

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and NASA have released the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, an open-source artificial intelligence model designed to help scientists analyze lunar surface data, according to a press release issued Sept. 10, 2026.

The model was trained on a dataset compiled by IBM and NASA researchers, aggregating more than 30 spatially aligned data layers from nine instruments across four missions, including NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, NASA's GRAIL mission, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's SELENE/Kaguya spacecraft.

According to a technical paper authored by IBM and NASA, the model outperforms the SwinV2-B ImageNet model by up to 23% across several tasks, including

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) have established a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich through an offset agreement with armasuisse, Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement.

The hub will host Switzerland's first IBM Quantum System Two at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano, operated by IBM and powered by the company's IBM Quantum Nighthawk processor. Deployment is expected by the end of 2026.

ETH Zurich will provide access to the quantum system for Swiss industries, startups, and academic institutions. Organizations joining the hub will also have immediate access to IBM's cloud-based fleet of quantum computers. Targeted research
