DraftKings, Flutter shares surge 7% as bill targets prediction market sports bets

Investing.com -- DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) and Flutter Entertainment (NYSE:FLUT) shares rose 7% Monday morning following a Wall Street Journal report that U.S. senators plan to introduce bipartisan legislation to ban sports bets on prediction markets.

The proposed legislation would prohibit entities regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, including prediction-market exchanges Kalshi and Polymarket’s U.S. platform, from listing contracts related to sporting events. The bill also seeks to ban casino-style games such as slot machines, video poker, blackjack and bingo from these platforms.

Investing.com -- Bank of America downgraded both DraftKings and Flutter Entertainment to Neutral, citing renewed pressure from volatile betting margins, state tax risks, and uncertainty surrounding emerging prediction markets.

The brokerage said structural “hold” rates, a key driver of sportsbook profitability, have weakened again during the football season after stabilizing earlier in the year.

That volatility, combined with higher taxes and softer handle growth, has led BofA to trim long-term earnings forecasts for both companies.

Investing.com -- DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) stock fell 0.75% and Flutter (NYSE:FLUT) dropped 3% on Friday after the New York Times reported that prediction market platform Kalshi raised over $300 million at a $5 billion valuation.

The funding round for Kalshi comes as the prediction market platform expands its reach to more than 140 countries and continues to disrupt the traditional sports betting industry. According to the report, Kalshi is now on track for $50 billion in trading volume on an annualized basis, a dramatic increase from approximately $300 million last year.

Investing.com -- Barclays has named Flutter Entertainment (LON:FLTRF) its top gaming pick heading into the end of 2025, citing the company’s leading market position, global diversification and favorable outlook across digital betting.

In a sector-wide note, Barclays said, “Digital Gaming is our favorite gaming sector into year-end, as we expect either handle growth or hold (or both) will improve sequentially.”

Analysts pointed to early signs of strong user engagement tied to the NFL season, noting that easier comparisons on both handle and hold provide “a better setup than over the last two years.”
