JPMorgan analyst Bill Peterson reiterated an Underweight rating on GrafTech (NYSE: EAF).

The analyst commented, "GrafTech has announced plans to permanently close its graphite electrode plant in Monterrey, Mexico. The news comes as the industry struggles with overcapacity from India and China. Management has previously taken steps to manage its footprint against these challenging dynamics, most recently in 1Q24, while also telegraphing the possibility of further curtailments in recent quarters. The wind down of Monterrey (~35Ktpa) is expected to conclude in 2Q27, while pin stock production will transition to its Pamplona, Spain facility, displacing ~16Ktpa of additional electrode production. GrafTech to permanently close Monterrey graphite electrode plant

GrafTech International Ltd. (NYSE: EAF) announced the permanent closure of its graphite electrode manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico, with production expected to conclude early in the second quarter of 2027.

The company plans to wind down Monterrey operations in phases, citing global structural overcapacity in the graphite electrode industry, driven by capacity expansion in China and India that has outpaced demand growth. The closure will reduce GrafTech's annual graphite electrode production capacity by approximately 51 thousand metric tons, bringing total annual capacity to approximately 127 thousand metric tons from approximately 178 thousand metric tons.
