Atea Pharmaceuticals starts Phase 1 trial of AT-587 for hepatitis E

Atea Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: AVIR) has initiated a first-in-human Phase 1 clinical trial of AT-587, an oral antiviral nucleotide analog being developed for the treatment of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection, according to a company statement.

The trial is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, sequential dose-escalation study in healthy volunteers. It includes single ascending dose and multiple ascending dose components, as well as a food-effect assessment. Part A evaluates single ascending doses under fasting conditions, while Part B evaluates multiple ascending doses administered once or twice daily for seven days, with dose selection guided by safety and pharmacokinetic data from Part A.

Atea Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AVIR) announced it has completed patient enrollment in its C-FORWARD Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating a fixed-dose combination of bemnifosbuvir and ruzasvir (BEM/RZR) for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

The trial enrolled more than 880 treatment-naïve patients across approximately 120 clinical sites in 17 countries outside North America. Topline results from C-FORWARD are expected around year-end 2026.

C-FORWARD compares BEM/RZR against sofosbuvir and velpatasvir, a current standard of care. BEM/RZR is administered once daily for eight weeks in patients without cirrhosis, or 12 weeks in patients with compensated cirrhosis, while the comparator regimen is administered once
