Alcatel (ALU) May Win 'Small Cell' Contract with Major Telecom (QCOM)

October 17, 2013 8:49 AM
Amid recently announcing plans to cut 10,000 jobs, Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) might be in talks to land a contract with a major domestic telecommunications company.

Reuters India said today that Alcatel's deal would involve implementations of small cells to help improved wireless coverage provided by the telecom.

News comes following a recent $135 million research deal between Alcatel and Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) for the development of miniature base stations, known as small cells. Those small cells have the capability to boost coverage in the range of 10 to 200 meters, a low-cost way for telecoms to expand coverage.

Shares of Alcatel are up 0.5 percent in early trading Thursday.
