Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) isn't just planning to update its Windows 8 platform this month.

indows Phone 8 Update 3 (8.0.10512) is primarily designed for upcoming hardware and will be released with new Nokia (NYSE: NOK) devices, which will be unveiled later this month. The mobile OS will have support for Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) Snapdragon MSM8974 quad-core chips along with support for displays in the 5- to 6-inch range.

Registered developers or those with a developer-unlocked device will be able to install WP8 Update 8 after having General Distribution Release 2 (GDR2) installed.

Otherwise, Microsoft Windows 8.1 will be available this week, with updates expected to be available on October 16th. Shares of Microsoft are lower in early trading Monday.
