Gamestop (GME) Up / Abercrombie (ANF) Down; Newsflash - Teens Are Fat

August 22, 2013 10:04 AM
Shares of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF) declined on Thursday in the wake of disappointing Q2 results and guidance. Meanwhile, GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) shares moved higher after reporting better than expected results over the same period.

Interestingly, Abercrombie's management had no explanation for the trouble it and other teen retailers are facing. American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) and Aeropostale, Inc. (NYSE: ARO) also reported disappointing results recently. Given impressive Gamestop results, clearly teens are spending, but apparently not on clothing.

Against this backdrop, there is some speculation on the Street that the decline is related to the growing number of overweight teens. There are no hard facts linking the decline in sales among teen apparel retailers to obesity, but a few traders believe there is a link. According to American heart associations, 1-in-3 teens are overweight.
