'Sheer'-ly You Must be Joking: lululemon (LULU) Puts Clients Through 'Bent Over' Test Before Refund Given

March 25, 2013 4:25 PM
lululemon athletica, inc. (Nasdaq: LULU) recently issued a statement warning of a shortage on its black Luon pants. The company said manufacturing led to the product being a little more sheer than expected and it would see a profit impact as a result.

Specifically, the release stated:

Guests who purchased black Luon pants after March 1st, either online or in stores, and believe they have affected product are welcome to return the product for a full refund or exchange. Please contact our Guest Education Center at 1-877-263-9300 with questions as to how to return items purchased through our e-commerce site.

There's no caveat in that statement. If pants were purchased after this date, you should be able to get a refund.

According to the U.K.'s Dailymail, some lululemon retail store are asking customers to "bend over" to ensure that the pants are sheer, thus qualifying for a refund.

One customer said she did the "bend over" test and felt "degraded" when her pants were deemed "not sheer." She called lululemon's Guest Education Center (GEC) and the associate confirmed that the proper procedure for handling the refund was to ensure that clothing items fit the bill.

lululemon said it didn't change specifications to the design of the pants, while the Taiwan-based supplier of the clothing claimed it was just following orders and lululemon "misjudged" customer tastes.

Shares of lululemon are down in late trading.
