GE Vernova to supply gas turbine for Côte d'Ivoire power plant
GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) has been selected to supply gas power technology for the Songon combined-cycle power plant near Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, according to a company press release.
Songon Energies, an Ivorian development investment company, chose GE Vernova to provide a 9E gas turbine and generator for the facility. The plant will be built by EPC contractor China Energy International Engineering Co., Ltd. and is expected to generate 372 megawatts (MW) of capacity upon its scheduled 2029 operational launch.
The facility is projected to represent up to 12 percent of Côte d'Ivoire's total installed power capacity and is expected to create up to 1,400 jobs. The project follows the signing of financing agreements in June.

Wang Xiaoming, Deputy General Manager and Acting CEO of Songon Energies, said the project is "designed to strengthen energy security and support future growing electricity demand growth in the Greater Abidjan region."
Joseph Anis, CEO of Gas Power in Europe, Middle East, and Africa at GE Vernova, said the company's scope extends beyond the turbine, including work on a high-voltage substation, digital software, and long-term service agreements.
Côte d'Ivoire reached an electrification rate of 94.3 percent by 2024 and is targeting universal electrification by 2030, while facing annual electricity demand growth of 10 to 15 percent.
