October 19, 2026 11:20 AM

Investing.com -- Battery-electric vehicle registrations in Europe increased 70.3% in September, driven by high oil prices, government subsidies and more affordable vehicle options.

BEV registrations reached 300,202 vehicles across 17 key European markets in September, representing a 32.6% market share, according to data from E-Mobility Europe, New Automotive and Fier Automotive released today. Nearly one-third of all cars sold in these markets during the month were fully electric.

Year-to-date registrations totaled 1.98 million BEVs, up 38.1% compared to the same period in 2025.

France led major markets with a 41.7% BEV market share and 65,243 registrations, while Germany recorded 88,724 registrations for a 34.6% market share.

The Nordic region maintained the highest electrification rates in Europe. Norway led at 98.8%, followed by Denmark at 88.8%, Finland at 62.7% and Sweden at 49.0%.

Ireland, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands each saw BEVs account for approximately half of all vehicle registrations.

The Czech Republic, Italy and Poland remained the least electrified markets in Europe, with BEV market shares of 11.2%, 7.6% and 6.2%, respectively.

The data comes as France and Germany agreed to soften proposed EU car emissions regulations.
