Raytheon, a business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), has been selected by the U.S. Space Force to modernize a network of ground-based radar sites used for missile launch detection and space object tracking, according to a company press release dated Oct. 15, 2026.

The work falls under the Ground-Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program, through which Raytheon will convert existing analog radar systems to digital architecture. The upgrades are intended to improve reliability, extend operational life, and enable more advanced capabilities at the affected sites.

Raytheon said its approach will establish a common open architecture designed to reduce vendor dependency and simplify future system upgrades. The program is structured to deliver prototype solutions first, followed by rapid fielding across remaining radar locations.

Sam Deneke, president of Air & Space Defense Systems at Raytheon, said the digitization effort is aimed at keeping pace with evolving threats. "Raytheon's technical approach enables faster deployment of new capabilities that will support the Space Force's effort to extend the performance and mission utility of these strategically important sites," Deneke said.

The press release did not disclose the contract value or the number of radar sites included in the program.
