Workday unveils autopilot AI agents for HR, finance, and IT

October 13, 2026 9:02 AM

Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ: WDAY) announced new AI agents designed to handle routine tasks across hiring, payroll, accounting, and IT deployment, according to a company press release issued at its Workday Rising 2026 conference in Las Vegas.

The Talent Acquisition Agent is available to early adopter customers as of the announcement date, with general availability planned for early 2027. It monitors open roles, identifies qualified candidates, assists with interview scheduling, and can draft outreach messages for recruiter review. The agent works with tools including Workday Recruiting, HiredScore, and Paradox.

Autopilot capabilities for the Payroll, Accounting, and Deployment Agents are planned for early adopter availability in early calendar year 2027. The Payroll Agent is designed to detect missing or incorrect pay data before payroll runs. The Accounting Agent will perform continuous financial testing and can extract contract details to prepare accounting entries and revenue recognition schedules. The Deployment Agent, which Workday said has been activated by nearly 5,000 customers since its announcement last September, will analyze a customer's current Workday configuration and flag new release capabilities that may apply to their setup.

All agents are described as operating within each customer's existing policies, permissions, and approval rules. Customers can configure which actions agents perform autonomously and which require human review. Every agent action is logged with details on what information was used and who approved it.

Workday's agents are orchestrated by Sana, the company's agentic coordination engine, which routes tasks to the appropriate agents and escalates to human review when needed.

"Probabilistic AI is great at guessing, but in payroll and finance, a good guess isn't good enough," said Gerrit Kazmaier, president of product and technology at Workday. "Our agents can work in the background because they follow the same policies, permissions, and approvals that already run the business."
