U.S. Army selects Viavi T/Rx system for drone test ranges

October 13, 2026 6:31 AM

Viavi Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) announced that the U.S. Army's Threat Systems Management Office (TSMO) has selected its T/Rx software-defined transceiver system to provide electromagnetic spectrum environments at Army test ranges recently opened to private industry.

The selection is part of the Army's Test Range Private Industry Initiative, which opened five range facilities to commercial developers working on drones, counter-drone systems, long-range fires, and low-cost interceptors. The program allows companies, including those without existing government contracts, to access range infrastructure to accelerate development of emerging military technologies.

TSMO will use the Viavi T/Rx system to replicate contested electromagnetic environments that reflect conditions on the modern battlefield. The system combines simultaneous signal generation and collection in a single field-deployable unit and operates across a broad range of instantaneous bandwidth.

Camp Grayling, one of the designated sites under the initiative, hosted an electromagnetic unreliability test in September 2026 using the T/Rx system. According to the company, the system was used to reproduce electronic warfare conditions observed in Ukraine to help developers harden drone and counter-drone systems.

"VIAVI is proud to be selected by TSMO to provide the electromagnetic spectrum environment that makes these ranges operationally realistic," said Doug Russell, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Aerospace & Defense at Viavi Solutions.
