AT&T and OpenAI partner on AI-powered legal services initiative

October 8, 2026 10:02 AM

AT&T (NYSE: T) announced a collaboration with OpenAI to develop artificial intelligence-enabled workflows for its in-house legal department, according to a press release from the company.

The initiative, described as a "flagship" design partnership, will use AT&T LegalEdge — AT&T's internal AI-focused legal center — as its foundation. LegalEdge launched in January 2026 and has handled nearly 100 legal matters in its first six months.

Under the arrangement, the two companies will design, build, and evaluate legal workflows that combine AI capabilities with attorney oversight. Planned applications include handling routine legal questions through AI agents and using AI to gather and synthesize information to support lawyers providing legal advice.

David McAtee, senior executive vice president and general counsel at AT&T, said the goal is to make institutional knowledge more accessible across the organization. "Legal judgment remains human," he added.

Jason Boehmig, GM Legal Industry at OpenAI, said AT&T is "rethinking how its legal expertise and institutional knowledge can serve the entire company," with lawyers' judgment remaining central to the process.

Bill Ryan, AT&T's senior vice president and chief compliance officer, said success will be measured by improvements in quality, knowledge accessibility, and capacity for experienced legal judgment, not by the volume of technology deployed.

The companies said human oversight, confidentiality, and governance will be built into every workflow. Lawyers will retain authority over how AI agents are used in each context.
