QuantumScape unveils solid-state battery system for AI data centers
QuantumScape Corporation (NASDAQ: QS) introduced a modular energy storage product called the QS PowerBlock, designed for use in AI data centers, according to a company press release dated Oct. 8, 2026.
The QS PowerBlock is based on QuantumScape's solid-state lithium-metal battery technology and is designed to support 800VDC architecture. The company says it is adaptable to a variety of module, shelf, and rack formats and is intended for use in industry-standard power rack configurations.
In prototype testing benchmarked against the Open Compute Project (OCP) Open Rack V3 specification, the QS PowerBlock demonstrated four times the power density and five times the runtime of current OCP standards. QuantumScape also noted that its battery cells showed thermal stability above 300°C in third-party and customer safety testing, compared to conventional lithium-ion cells, which the company says typically enter thermal runaway at approximately 180°C.

QuantumScape cautioned that performance results were achieved under controlled conditions using prototype testing and modeled system configurations, and that final product performance will depend on design, system configuration, and real-world operating conditions.
"With the QS PowerBlock, we are bringing this value proposition to AI data center customers, to enable the 800VDC designs that will power the next phase of AI growth," said Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO and president of QuantumScape.
The company also announced it has joined the OCP as a member. The QS PowerBlock design is scheduled to be displayed at the 2026 OCP Global Summit, Oct. 12–15, at the San Jose Convention Center, at a booth hosted by Megmeet, a power system component provider for the Nvidia MGX ecosystem.
