Nutriband Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRB) has filed a non-provisional utility patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to expand intellectual property protection for its AVERSA™ transdermal abuse-deterrent technology, the company announced Oct. 8, 2026.

The application covers improved aversive formulations and coating application methods designed to enhance the abuse-deterrent properties of the AVERSA™ technology. If granted, the patent could extend worldwide protection for AVERSA™-based products, including AVERSA™ Fentanyl, to 2046, based on the standard 20-year statutory term from the non-provisional filing date.

AVERSA™ technology uses a proprietary aversive agent coating that employs taste aversion to deter oral abuse and reduce accidental exposure to transdermal patches containing opioids and stimulants. Nutriband's existing intellectual property portfolio for the technology includes patents granted in 46 countries, among them the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Russia, China, Canada, Mexico, and Australia.

Nutriband's lead product under development is an abuse-deterrent fentanyl patch incorporating the AVERSA™ technology. The company is based in Orlando, Fla.
