Woodward (NASDAQ: WWD) has been selected by Airbus to provide an actuation system for a ground-based folding wing demonstrator, according to a press release from the Fort Collins, Colorado-based company.

Woodward will supply a complete wing actuation system, including a power delivery unit, a high-power hinge actuator, and additional components. The system will be tested at Airbus facilities in Bremen, Germany, and Bristol, U.K. Woodward will also support trade studies with Airbus on design elements, including whether to use hydraulic or electric power for the system.

The Airbus folding wing demonstrator is designed to explore technology that would allow aircraft wings to fold and lock during taxi to fit within existing airport gate infrastructure. The project targets a larger folding portion of the wing than found on current aircraft.
